One of the most significant budget cuts DOGE has ordered is setting the limit for BLM firefighters' credit cards and travel credit cards to just $1, making it impossible for them to buy supplies or travel to wildfire sites. Additionally, the Trump administration froze the disbursement of approximately $3 billion in wildfire mitigation-related funds. This includes things like clearing dead branches and undergrowth that can help wildfires spread quickly if not removed ahead of time.
5.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. All 650 million acres of land that the BLM manages has someone else more local who handles fire suppression. The most charitable interpretation of BLM's role in this is coordinating efforts across multiple territories. Furthermore, the federal government's more significant fire suppression efforts come from the Department of the Interior's Office of Wildland Fire, and USDA Forest Service. That's taken directly from their own website.
In other words, it's completely redundant and doesn't need to exist especially in the capacity it already does, just like most of FEMA.
The BLM has approximately 10,000 employees, the majority of which are pen-pushers (and probably won't be employed for long in favor of AI/automation). Its main priorities are land planning and resources usage, issuing permits, followed by law enforcement, with public relations, conservation, and fire suppression very low on the list... Again, doesn't even need to have that function when more local and specialized organizations are better suited.

Anonymous(18-24)1 yYeah I mean the house is the burden of the ‘poor’ so, why do we have to help them right? Let them all be homeless, after all it is so easy to climb out of poverty and have success.
Take it from me a billionaire who inherited all his wealth to fuck around with and can make thousands upon thousands of failed business ventures and find success with just the 5 that work.

@Paige90 Yes. I guess you don't know that their claimed "saving money" is part of that. They have no proof of numbers that they are saving money for the US. All they are doing is firing, laying off, closing buildings they deem not important, such as agencies in charge of inspection of foods, safety, and reporting of food poisoning/contamination, to set a few examples. Trump is doing this because he has to have enough money to afford to give those billionaire friends of his huge tax cuts, while the middle class and poor are paying for it with less tax cuts and cuts for SNAP, Medicare and Medicaid, and other programs for the poor. If you can't see why he is doing this, then God bless you.

Asker1 yI would like to think that even they know better than to do that but something tells me they don't.
Asker1 yYes they have. They will defund or try to defund anything that helps people. I don't think they believe that anybody deserves any help at all and after all the cruelty is the point.

1 yBLM has credit cards from the government? What?
Asker1 yYes, because even firefighters have lives. BLM firefighters are often called to fight fires that are many states and many miles away. They need to fly there because this is an emergency situation. As it turns out the airlines don't fly them for free no matter who they are. So they have to be able to use a government credit card because they don't get paid enough to make these flights on their own credit cards and they don't want to because they also have to feed their families. I'm sorry of some of this is shocking to you but giving a person who puts out fires that keep you and I in our houses is just fine with me.
1 yWhy is it a federal problem if it's not federal lands? You should be bringing this to your state and local authority. Or... better yet... if you're so concerned about it... volunteer your time and energy to resolve the problem.

1 ySo how well has the wildfire mitigation effort been working? Could logging companies be also be part of the solution and not made out to be evil plant destroying companies?
00 Reply 728 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Eliminating firefighters would save money because they cost ten times more than the property they save. It is almost impossible for modern houses and buildings to burn.

Asker1 yBurned houses. Like those of my neighbors. Why do you attempt to spread such lies like
"It is almost impossible for modern houses and buildings to burn."
That is complete BULLSHIT.- 1 y

@DrPepper12 The fact is my statement is accurate. In California, building codes require sprinkler systems in houses and buildings, so, in the unlikely event, there is a fire, the sprinkler system will activate. If a forest fire, houses close enough might catch fire, but in that event, not much the firefighters could do anyway.
Moreover, in the unlikely event there is a fire that the occupants can't put out with a fire extinguisher or water, by the time the firefighters arrive, their only recourse to put out the fire with lots of water. Water that will destroy and collapse the sheet rock and make a total mess of what remains of the house. In effect, what remains is nearly worthless. Their only benefit is possibly preventing the fire from spreading to other houses.
Older houses are many times more likely to burn than modern homes designed to prevent fires. Only 1 in 3,000 houses burn down each year. Fires are difficult to start. However, if a fire does start, it only takes 5 minutes for the house to be fully engulfed in flames house but it will burn for another two hours. 5 minutes is too little time for firefighters to arrive and do much good.
The cost of firefighters is greater than the damage by fires. Occasionally, that is, when the fire doesn't spread quickly, firefighters will put out the fire with very little damage.
Asker1 y@kelley1 You didn't write that - who did, and where di you copy it from?
Asker1 yThere is no law mandating sprinklers in residential houses in California.

Lol. I appreciate you being upset about clearing dead brush to prevent fires. Maybe you can do better than the governor of CA
Asker1 yThe governor of California is not in charge of clearing brush. Anyway, brush clearance is not the problem. Wind is the problem and there is not much anybody can do about that.
The governor of california is not in charge of land management within his state? Is that what you're stating?
