Hitler felt Germans would be happier after the war traveling across the vast and sprawling Reich in their Volkswagon freely and quickly across the highway. ditching the idea train transport which he felt was gloomy and confined.

Wrong. The autobahn system in Germany was first begun shortly before the NSDAP came to power (in 1930, if I remember this correctly). In other words, during the days of the much-maligned Weimar Republic.
