I think you're oversimplifying the diversity stuff a bit, but you're ofc right that the whole thing is very silly.

It's kinda like the definition of cheating. That is to say, there is no conclusive definition. It comes down to each individual person what they see as cheating. You have couples that are happy in open relationships or polygamous relationships for instance.

With the diversity stuff I would argue that it comes down to who gets bothered by characters getting changed like this, and why they're bothered. Changing an established character is obviously not ideal, but if nobody is bothered or if the vast majority likes the change, then in my opinion it doesn't matter.
So in the past when Hollywood would make most characters be played by white people even when a character is clearly meant to be of another race, while silly, there probably was no public outcry to speak of.

Now, I agree that it was stupid then (not that I was one of the people that had a reason to be bothered, at least at the time), but I'm also in the camp that thinks it's even stupider now. Because it very much seems as though in most cases it is being done not for the sake of the story, but in the name of diversity first. And if this just happened once or twice, that would be one thing, but it feels like there is a consistent pattern of this being done over and over and over again in these last few years, all in the name of diversity. Story and character is secondary. That gets annoying.

So yes, I agree that it's hypocritical. It should never have been done in the first place, and it shouldn't be happening now. Not to this extreme at least.

Oh, I just thought of a GREAT example (in my opinion). I dunno if you've ever watched the terminator movies, but there is a bad ass female main character in those first two movies that James Cameron made. Kicking ass left and right, training and protecting her son that is supposed to become this great leader of the resistance against the machines one day, right.
Fast forward to the latest Terminator movie. I enjoyed it. Effects and story was pretty great, but I guess the new director decided women needed more love, and so in the story that main character's son dies and never grows up to become the leader of the resistance. A cyborg woman from the future instead comes back to protect a girl who is now the new target as the future leader of the resistance. I was a little disappointed that that was the direction that the story had gone because I liked the son, but it was fine. Until the former mother herself complains about something along the line of men getting all the credit all the time. The woman that everybody is in agreement is an absolute bad ass in the first two movies, says this. And I can't remember for sure exactly, but I vaguely remember the cyborg woman sharing her sentiment. And after the movie was over, I was just sitting there thinking about it in sheer disbelief. Because of all the movies to put something like this in... Terminator should one of the last franchises to argue this point in. It's totally unnecessary. Heck, James Cameron has always put amazing women characters in his movies, bad ass and otherwise. Absolute madness.
