Should Greenland be allowed to exist independently? They are not able to defend themselves. They live on a huge island that is strategic for the safety of half of the world. Denmark cannot defend themselves either, much less Greenland. Should Greenland become a US state and prosper while securing their future and the world’s safety? 50,000 people is barely a decent side US town.
Be allowed to? I don't know, I suppose I'm in favor of the right to self determination, even if that means your own destruction. Do I think it would be better if they joined the US? Yes.

"Strategically important" here is code for "has valuable minerals USA will need if China retaliates by refusing to sell them minerals" to save American tech companies from the consequences of thr tariff policies.
As for the military importance, USA is already allowed a military base on Greenland. It has never done anything to keep people safe but exerting military control over a trade route that if more ice melts, is likely to become the world's most important trade route, is obviously again of monetary interest.
As for Greenland. Grernland has not been denied independence. Greenland had a vote where 70 percent or so voted for independence. This is the quoted one.
What is not quoted is that after that they set independence in motion, their local already largely sovereign politicans realized that without Danish funding living quality would drop. So they had a new vote that went "Would you want independence even if it came with a drop in living quality" to this, 80 percent voted no.
The only military threat Greenland has faced since WW2 is USA this last year. Which is awkward given USA swore on God and all that is holy to, in return for Denmark selling them the Virgin Islands for a single million, never ever trouble Greenland.
Just because someone can't defend themselves it doesn't give you the right to attack them nor deny them the right to exist. I wouldn't be surprised if we see terrorist groups arising in places like Canada and Greenland arising and attacks on American soil. The next 911 is a realistic possibility the way things are going.

Once Greenland obtains independence from Denmark they will be in further economic trouble. Denmark hasn’t done much for them and actually has ignored them for sometime. They would be a lot richer as a US state. However, I am not sure if it is worthwhile letting them be a state as 56,000 people would have 2 US senators, the same as any other state such as economic powerhouses California, New York, Texas and Florida. Certainly they would greatly benefit from being part of the US. But it wouldn’t really be an attack on Greenland if it came to that, it would be more like just showing up :D. It’s up to them though really but they cannot say no to certain things. Greenland will be utilized for control of the Arctic ocean no matter what they say. This will make it safer for everyone in Europe as well.
Canada contributes so little to their own defense as they count on the US almost completely. They said they would never reach 2% GDP for defense and I believe them. Fine, but we will use nukes to defend that territory. They have had huge tariffs for many years on such things as butter at 288%. There is a whole list of items like that. They will have to come in line but that may cause deep financial issues for them. Perhaps they can survive that but the US won’t be letting it happen under Trump for sure or his Republican successor, if that happens. Some provinces like Alberta may break off and join the US although I doubt it. Either way is fine but no more high tariffs on US goods. Now that they are used to these tariffs on the US, the jolt coming off of it will really hurt as they have become dependent on them. Senior Canadian politicians have indicated it will destroy them. Not our problem.

The US is just making fun of Canada as the 51st state. Greenland though has a real opportunity to be a state but they probably won’t much to the detriment of their own personal welfare. The Europeans will likely talk them out of it. But it doesn’t matter. As Trump said, we will get it (what we need) one way or another… and ironically that will help Greenlanders and Europeans.

Greenland's population is typical of a US territory. You don't just instantly become a state when you join America. You have to go through a statehood process. So if Greenland did want to join the USA, they'd join as a territory at a typical territory population, but this would open up new business opportunity which would drive new population migration to the island. The smaller states are around a half million people at the moment. American military bases and mining, trade, and logistics companies could easily grow the population of the island ten fold and put it on par with Wyoming, Vermont, or Alaska in a relatively short period of time. There resources are there, so men would come to work for the right price.
don't know. I haven't heard strong explanation or case for either. Intuitively, I'm thinking if you want to stop a missile from hitting USA, then Greenland offers a way to stop one before it gets close to usa. I suspect that's the issue, or maybe the need for navy out there.

We have bases there now and yes it does help protect the US from ballistic missiles. now think it is also about control of the Arctic Ocean and important minerals. The Europeans would hate the thought of them becoming a US state and will likely try and talk them out of it which will cause Greenland to become even more stagnant. A a full US state they would have massive infrastructure improvements and more money overall. Their kids futures would be brighter as well since they would be full US citizens.
Greenland hasn't needed to defend itself from anyone so perhaps declaring it's strategic for the safety of half the world is not actually true just because a certain someone said it was. A recent poll said 6% of Greenlanders support being part of America and 85% are against it. Perhaps America has its own problems it needs to focus on than trying to annex Greenland for itself and pretending it's for the safety of half the world.
It’s not like an ice island with some minerals is THAT important, certainly not enough to offer statehood to which is a very big deal. So it is strategic given its location. Anyway, maybe we will just take it. NATO can’t stop us as we are NATO’s strength.

Allowed? If they are granted independence from Denmark, yes. But if they want protection from the USA, they will have to make a deal. Natural resources are what they have to offer. USA has no obligation to protect them for free.

I think an association agreement with the US, like a few other tiny states in the Pacific have, is the best solution. Denmark can't defend Greenland.
