What's the psychology behind thinking Denmark doesn't own Greenland?

Erik discovered it. Greenlanders were 100% Norwegian until 400 years later Inuit invaded their territory. For centuries, Greenlanders made expeditions into America, where the USA is today, to trade with natives and explore. Now we are acting like it's immoral for Denmark, which has supported Greenland for centuries, to own Denmark. When Denmark has educated everyone on the island, provided them healthcare free, and stimulates 30% of their GDP every year.

The psychology is that Trump needs an excuse to make noise about it so he can shift the focus away from his criminal case and maybe justify taking over all the metals and natural deposits on Greenland. Which would be an incredible advantage if China and USA gets upset and China stops supplying electronics. Having it in USA rather than having to import it from Greenland/Denmark.

Denmark settled Greenland. They did not colonize it. Furthermore, Greenland self governs now in most aspects. It basically has the support and protection from Denmark while, in most aspects, being its own country.

Greenland did have a few votes quite recently (2017-2019?) about if they wanted actual independence. Mind you, if they had a very strong desire for it Denmark would probably just agree. Scandinavian countries have a history of allowing independence when it is wished for.

Greenland did vote 70% or so yes. They wanted independence. This is what people rally behind. It started some investigations on both ends to the feasibility of it.

A year or so later, a separate vote happens to the same people. "Do you want Greenland to be independent even if that leads to a decrease in living quality?". 80% voted no, independence took a backseat.

Following this, Greenland did not ask for independence. They have asked for an increased form of self governance called oavhängighet in Swedish. Its a tricky political concept but boils down to being an independent part of the country.

But really. It comes down to Trump wanting to do some expansion so his legacy isn't just weak markets and everyone he ever worked with calling him a moron.

The natives where there a few thousand years before any Europeans. Their population and language is far more closely related to Asian than it is to Dutch.

The psychology behind this is that Trump and his followers live with denial all the time and they are masters of it. So all you have to do is deny something and it becomes your truth. In this case all you have to do is deny that Denmark owns Greenland and then you are free to go take it. That is exactly what Trump is building up to. And of course his followers agree with that.
