Should the US buy GREENLAND from Denmark?

Question

There's more than a rumor circulating that incoming President Trump may make an offer to Denmark to buy Greenland (autonomous Danish territory) and expand the United States territory by 800 thousand square miles (2 million square kilometers), the first expansion since 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii became states.

There would be some benefits to both countries. Denmark could use the money, and Greenland is mostly independent from Denmark anyway. The US could use the extra territory, which would enhance its claims to the Arctic and the resources there. It could also be a Republican state, which would let Puerto Rico become a state too, as a Democratic one, bringing the state totals to 52.

We need to invest in something because all the money that this country spends on b******* is ridiculous and will never get that money back but I hope we start investing in something we quit investing in our kids we quit investing in our military we're quitting in things that make us money our government throws money away they throw money into studying butterfly wings for 22 million dollars every 6 months we need to take a big time out and look where all the money is going because whatever Trump does or whatever Trump is going to do I hope it works because after that 4 years we're going to be almost right back where we started if something doesn't happen

Obviously if a deal can be made, it should be acquired. America has has defended Greenland since WWII. Greenland is an American protectorate and houses an important Space Force base for nuclear defense. In the past it has home to a clandestine nuclear facility at Camp Century. The island has mineral assets that are important to American national security. The geography lends itself to potential trade routes as well.

So Americans bitch about the country not having enough cash to solve internal problems such as homelessness yet there's money in the kitty to buy some country. Has anyone asked the Greenlanders how they feel been sold off?

Given the geographical location America would be better off creating something like the EU that brought together Denmark Greenland USA. Being the largest they'd effectively be in control and it wouldn't cost as much.

My Answer: The real question is Greenland up for sale by Denmark? NO. So even if it was a good idea, it still wouldn’t happen. Sorry to rain on the parade people.

Secondly, last time TRUMP offered he was denied due to Denmark stating as such. Since Denmark isn’t a pushover don’t be expecting such a wild trade. Also we don’t even know the price of such an expense since Alaska was pennies for acres of land which seemed to be a good investment in the long run due to finding oil so… This time around Denmark KNOWS the value of the land also wants it around so, clearly it would be a hefty bill to pay with the taxpayer dollars.

I'd prefer it to be a territory than a state. Making it a state would be too complicated for everyone. Where with just being a territory, they wouldn't even need to learn English.

Trump wants to buy it to mine the rare earth minerals. He made them an offer his first term, but neither Denmark nor the people of Greenland were interested.

I think he should offer to give back St. Croix, as part of the deal. I don't really care for that one, as it's off to the side and is the most complicated Virgin Island to visit.

Owning Greenland would be cool. There would definitely be a tourism boom too. I think the people of Greenland are happy as they are, though it won't hurt for him to try again.

But to be frank, the days of buying territory from other countries are long gone.

Because of its position not really its resources Greenland will end up getting conquered in war if not by us than an enemy.

We can be nice and offer Denmark money for the island or we can wait until Denmark gives it independence and the next major war requires us to take the island.

Not going to happen. Greenland is practically an independent country from Denmark, although they do receive some needed financial support. Greenlanders don't want their territory to be turned into some military base or ugly economic operation. It's like if Japan wanted to buy Hawaii from the US for the prime surfing spots.

Denmark will never sell Greenland to him, there are likely a lot of mineral deposits on Greenland that will be accessible one day. That is just a political ploy to rally support as usual. If the majority of Americans were actually educated on foreign affairs they’d see through this nonsense.
