According to where I'm shopping. For tips, I try to give people cash. At farmer's markets I try to pay cash because those people are small business people. If I save 3% on credit card charges, I pay cash.

Lots of small businesses will tell you there's a surcharge if you use plastic. I do my best to avoid surcharges and to give merchants cash where it counts. Thoughtful shopping.

I use a credit card whenever I can, rarely use cash. At the end of each month, I pay the credit card bill in full. Using credit cards as certain befits that cash doesn't have, especially if you have a disagreement with the vendor over an incorrect charge.
