No country is tariffing the U. S. over 10 % unless they're enemies. In Switzerland there's no tariffs on U. S. products. Countries want to sell to the U. S. so they give the U. S. preferential treatment over other countries but somehow Trump thinks the U. S. is a victim.

That's it. There you go. Funnily enough this is like failing highschool math but at an international stage. Whoever thought this is how it works is... intellectually challenged.

Basically punish anyone who exports more to USA than they buy from USA. As a country primarily living on imports, it leads to the types of numbers you see.

And yes. For USA it is better to outsource lower level manufacturing and instead focus on work higher in the production chain that is generally worth more.

Anyway these 'reciprocal tariffs' are neither reciprocal nor based on tariffs. Places like Leshoto (poor African country primarily selling diamonds to USA) gets hit with a heavy tariff because americans buy diamonds but Leshoto is not buying American products since well... they can't afford it and are buying cheaper options.

It is nonsense and it is not how you tackle a trade deficit.

I did see how troubling this is, we had free trade in this country when it came to working with the global foreign governments around the world where we did $78 billion in total tariffs, now that total is $718 billion to my knowledge.
The issue is, corporations don’t like to be squeezed from a Pro Capitalist perspective right?

Freight company gets squeezed with tariffs > they have to pay which > leads to corporations having to pay more for the capacity they used to send for cheaper > corporations increase their prices for consumers > consumers have to spend more for less. See? Simple economics 101 here.

It's also that the U. S. wanted free trade when it was benefitting the most from it but now that other countries are competitive Trump is throwing a tantrum. I think he sees problems ahead and he wants to force the world to give the U. S. back the advantage they used to have just after WW2 but he doesn't understand that no country will ever be in that position again. It was a one time opportunity. The world is too developed and competitive now.

Our biggest export to the U. S. is pharmaceuticals and that is exempt from tariffs. So that's good but it will still have an impact on other businesses. It will be an interesting few weeks that's for sure :)

So it's a comingled mess I cannot figure out. I know we are sinking in a debt mud bog, so he is taking action to attempt to fix it. Doing so, may cause other deeper problems.

This is all more like an earthquake and not so sure how it turns out. I see other risks geopolitically.

Trumps always been a finance guy... not saying he's great, but others see it same as him. He's the one willing to attempt a fix.

Some of this is not their fault either... we produce crap. have you tried our cheese compared to Italian cheese? Other countries produce better products and a tariff is't going to fix that. We need to fix our land which may be impossible.

There are no tariffs on U. S. exports he made those numbers up in his head. The EU has a average tax of 1% on U. S. imports. The fact that you don't know any of this is the concerning thing. He thinks having a trade deficit is the same as tariffs. But he doesn't understand that countries wanting to sell to the U. S. market is a way more powerful position than making things in the U. S. and exporting them.

VAT applies to all goods sold inside the country including domestically produced goods. So the U. S. goods are not at a disadvantage because of VAT. You must be on some kind of drugs.

The VAT is taken a percentage of the sale price. You can see on the bill how much of the price was VAT. But it's already included in the price you don't even notice it as a consumer. The business just has to raise their prices slightly so they can absorb the tax. But as I said it applies to everything. If you go eat in a restaurant you pay VAT, if you buy a samsung phone or an iphone you pay VAT, If you buy a beer from a local brewery you pay VAT. It doesn't affect the market at all because everything just becomes slightly more expensive.

US dairy to Canada only has tariffs above a certain quota to prevent dumping. The US has never sent enough dairy to Canada to hit the quota that triggers tariffs being applied. Trump actually negotiated that so he's either stupid or a liar
