No, RepublicaNs want to suppress the votes of any non-white or non-male people, and this is a way to do it. There is virtually NO voting fraud in the US, and there never has been. What little has occurred was done by Republicans.

Many people do not have money for a cab or a car to travel to get government ID, especially poor people, old people, and people of color. These are the same people that Republicans are worried might vote for them. I am not all that sure these are valid reasons, but what is valid is research showing that requiring voter ID consistently results in much less voting among the groups I mentioned, and that it is true that these groups tend not to vote for Republicans. Another truth is that there has not been voting fraud in the US of any magnitude, and the few people that have been caught were caught illegally going to favor Republicans.
