The problem with globalization as it went down here in the temple of Capitalism that is the USA is that ALL of the wealth it generated went to a relative handful of extremely wealthy people as unearned income.

Virtually NONE of the wealth creation went to Joe & Jane average. They lost their jobs in textile mills, furniture factories, steel mills, auto factories, shoe factories, consumer electronics factories, etc., and continue to wallow in poverty shoveling burgers through a drive up window at age 55.

Investors cleaned up. Consumers got cheap stuff. Employees got a red hot poker up their asses. And the US became dependent on trading relationships which Orange Jesus has just trashed in a magnificent fit of stupidity.

But but but if we give the Oligarchs everything they want... get rid of labor law protections, get rid of workplace safety laws, get rid of pollution laws... the Oligarchs will bring the jobs back. No they won't. Unless you're willing to work for $12 a day without benefits.

The Oligarchs bought the House, the Senate, the Presidency, and the Courts with dark money. Their toadies passed the laws, implemented the laws, and upheld the laws. It's all legal. But everyone knows it stinks like a dead raccoon got shoved up the collective ass of the middle class so that Oligarchs could have more.

The thing is when you're used to having everything even a little decline can feel bad. The U. S. did benefit the most and also pushed free trade a lot. But now the tides are turning and they have been for 20 years. The rules that before they pushed on other countries: "Deal with it, adjust to the realities of the global economy" now suddenly the rules don't seem as fair anymore. I'm not saying every American feels this way. A lot of people are against these tariffs, but I think that's where Trumps anger at the world comes from. He expects things to be the way they used to be. He doesn't seem to understand that every country keeps moving forwards and developing. No countries economy stays the same.

Switzerland used to make fabrics in the industrialisation and that helped the economy a lot but now fabrics are made in India or Pakistan or China but that's fine, we've moved on to other things.

The U. S. has a lot of issues that should and can be adressed internally issues that have been persisiting for decades and decades but politicians don't adress them. That's the real cause of the current difficulties, not other countries.

A trillion dollar trade deficit is really bad, especially when it comes in large part from huge budget deficits and offshoring in search of absolute advantage. Substituting foreign production for domestic production to that extent and then borrowing money from foreigners to pay for it is a very bad idea.

As for unemployment rates, you do know that someone who works even just a part-time job a few hours a week is considered employed in the statistics, right? And someone who has given up looking for work isn't counted.

Just looking at unemployment rates masks the fact that a significantly smaller percentage of US men are employed than in the past. And mere rates do not tell us anything about the quality of jobs. The areas hit by manufacturing losses haven't replaced them with better jobs.

Supporting fair trading practices among our trading partners does not equate to "denouncing globalization".

The US has benefitted from globalization, but it has also created significant problems for many Americans. In the case of most of our trading partners, they have been benefitting more than we have. It's time for that to change.

Trump's goal is not just to bring back some of the industry America has lost, but also to force our trading partners to play fair. He is only doing to them what they have been doing to us for decades.
