Special government employees are permitted to work for the federal government for "no more than 130 days in a 365- day period," according to data from the Office of Government Ethics.
Elon Musk is a "special government employee," which means he can't work for more than 130 days in a year's time.
130 days since Inauguration Day is May 30, 2025.
The White House has not disclosed any clear timeline for closing down DOGE, and the government cost-cutting organization was never supposed to become a permanent fixture in Washington. DOGE was originally intended to operate until July 4, 2026.Trump told reporters this week that "at some point, he’s [Musk] going to be going back" to running his companies. As far as the Department of Government Efficiency, Trump said "at a certain point, I think it will end."
"We think probably over the next two or three months, we’ll be pretty much satisfied with the people that are working hard and want to be members of the administration," Trump said last week.
"I think we will have accomplished most of the work required to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars within that time frame," Musk told Bret Baier of Fox News on March 27 when asked about his 130-day tenure.

First of all, we told you that Elon Musk and Trump could never function together over a longer period of time. One of them would push out the other. It was Republicans that believed they were a match made in heaven and that they would stick together throughout the entire presidency.
Secondly, the President has plenty of means for how to retain a "Special government employee" and they are regularly kept around after the 130 day period, including throughout the entire administration. If Trump had any desire to keep Elon then this would not have been an issue, even if we ignore the fact that Trump has regularly completely disregarded the law and rules in the first place.
Thirdly, this follows the same patterns as when Trump kicks other people out of his inner circle that we have observed countless times in his first administration. This was an internal power struggle that put Trump against Elon, simple as that. Notable this was the pattern where they separated on "good terms" which means Elon might return to some capacity in the outer circles of Trump after all the hate blows over.
As for DOGE, the signals has been that the organization will be dismantled with several references that the people working in DOGE will either no longer be employed soon or that they will be moved into other departments.

1 yWho told you Elon was resigning? The news I listen to would be flipping the fuck out if that was going on. Be honest, was it Yahoo News, MSNBC, CNN, or something similar?
I did a search to find this claim... this is what I found.
"Debunked Claims
Several outlets and officials have flagged resignation stories as false:
Politico’s April 2 Report: Suggested Trump told his inner circle Musk would step back from DOGE soon."Politico was getting paid a shit ton of money from USAID to make fake news for the left, and it looks like they didn't stop once Musk shut it down. So if that was the source, you read fake news AKA propaganda. Musk and a whole bunch of people have already said it was fake news. Not going to copy and paste that list because it's long and I don't think you'd care.
So my true answer to this question is you need to find a better source of news than wherever you got that fake shit. I've been watching CNN daily to figure out exactly what's been making people with TDS go crazy, and I haven't heard anything from there. They use tricky lies that could technically be true, opinions that are not factual, and a lot of suggestion... But I haven't caught any outright lies yet. Only been doing this for about 4 days though.
Anyways, my true answer to this question is you need to find a better source of news than wherever you got that fake shit.

1 yHow for it feel to spread false information?
those two are chummy.
it would so awesome to have them both work side by side for longer term… they are working round the clock to get the country back in order since it’s been going downhill for over 20-30 years. Those who are short sighted will never understand how government work.
Elon has so much in his hands… he has to still run his other businesses…
he already got the DOGE team set up amd I’m sure he will continue to work with trump on other issues.

1 yYs, Elon Musk is stepping down, but it’s unlikely that it’s solely becz of disagreements with Trump over tariffs. While they may not always align politically, Musk’s decisions often involve a mix of business strategy, public perception, and long-term goals. His stepping down seems more about shifting focus or reducing direct political involvement rather than just one disagreement...

Those two have very similar views.
If they can work together longer it will be very helpful.
Elon has a lot of going on… but I’m sure trump and him will be on the phone daily.

1 yOh come on... you know the reason. The Orange Man-Baby has been upstaged by the Weird Looking Racist who's a fan of Apartheid. You know, the other billionaire trust fund baby who is actually a billionaire.
People and the press are calling Musk the "Co-President". Musk is dominating every news cycle. That kills a malignant narcissist like the Orange Man-Baby. It diminishes him. It steals away the attention he craves. And Musk has made himself a political liability with his moronic hack & slash approach to cutting government staff and then scrambling to hire people back after his shit blows up in his face on a daily basis.
tRump is doing what Orange Jesus always does. Musk is a loser. tRump never met Musk. But a lot of people don't like Musk. Now tRump doesn't like Musk either. But he doesn't really know the guy. Maybe they shook hands once or twice.
Same mental illness from the same piece of shit. Please tell me you saw this coming.
30 Reply i wonder when you guys will stop listening to sources that consistently lie to you. Generally when a source is bad, it can't be trusted, now or in the future. So when they shovel crap down your throat and tell you to swallow, one would think eventually you'd say no I don't want to eat shit...

He was only allowed a number of days to do this. However, this is not the last you'll see of him. I'm sure it won't be. He's too involved in wanting power here.

1 yElon is better off running his own companies than DOGE anyway. DOGE doesn't really have real power when it comes to reducing the size of the government. All it does is exposed any "misused" of taxpayers money and it's up to the President (sign executive orders) or the Congress (enact laws) to remove or stop any government programs they deemed as a waste of tax dollars.
Also, don't be surprised if it turns out that Trump fired him. Egotism is a human nature. The clashing of egos is bound to happen regardless who is in power or not.10 Reply- 2.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
1 yI don't know if he is resigning, or what he is resigning from. But he is spread too thin. it's pretty obvious that he can't do it all. So something has to go. He admitted himself long ago that it was a problem. He has to limit how many things he'll do, just like anyone else.
But yea, he might disagree with Trump. Two people are never going to agree on everything. But with Trump, that doesn't set well. They are both strong willed and I'm sure they butt heads.

1 yWhat we are hearing down here in Florida is that the other day trump had his cute little attorney general bent over a chair on Air Force 1 fucking her in her ass. A bit later musk showed up to give trump his daily dick sucking and got his mouth full of shit which has pissed him off and he has decided to go back and play with his dwindling car company.
20 Reply 1.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. No. While that disagreement certainly did not help, the reason Musk is resigning is because Musk made Trump look bad by doing things like firing people that Trump later had to rehire. This is about trying to protect Trump from the consequences of Musks reckless actions in DOGE, nothing more.

1 yFake news!
Musk responded Wednesday on X that it was “fake news” that he would step away from DOGE in the coming weeks. The administration, however, confirmed on Wednesday that Musk is expected to wrap up his stint as Trump's hatchet man in late May or June, when his 130 days as a “special government employee” comes to an end.10 Reply
1 yTrump was vocal about tariffs long before election campaign. Musk is a pathetic loser and it's clear that his influence, hurts their political agenda. The drastic failure in Wisconsin made it clear that, Elon doesn't have the effect they desire, outside the Net.

1 yI think it has to with all the Tesla stuff. He didn't seem to care about being called a "Nazi" and having Tesla dealerships vandalized, but I think the line was drawn when they started burning Teslas owned by private citizens and when that grandma got beaten for simply driving a Tesla. He doesn't want to see innocent people suffer

His tenure was planned long in advance and everyone (including the public) knew he would only be there for a short time. He runs Tesla and SpaceX and Twitter. He was only brought into the White House to consult.

So he might be wanting to turn his attention back to that. Elon always wears a lot of hats but I think Mars is his first love.
