Bezos remakes Washington Post opinion page in defense of ‘personal liberties and free markets’. Thoughts?

“There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job,” Bezos wrote to Post staff in a note that he also shared on X.

The change to the paper’s opinion section, a decision made by Bezos himself, underscores the billionaire’s increasing influence over its editorial decision-making. In October, Bezos killed the planned endorsement of then-Vice President Kamala Harris, a decision that led to 250,000 canceled subscriptions, according to reports from the time.

The decision not to back a presidential candidate, which Bezos defended by saying “endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election,” led to a number of departures from the editorial board.

Several of the Post’s top reporters have left for competitors in recent months, including The Atlantic and The Wall Street Journal, after structural changes to the newsroom.
