How good are you at holding a Public Speech? Have you ever held a Public Speech? If so how did it go and what was your experience?

What do you mean by "holding a public speech"? Do you mean giving a speech to an audience like at a business conference? I'm comfortable with getting up in front of a room full of people for 10-30 minutes. I've done a lot of it. I don't stress over it. It's usually stuff I'm very familiar with. Some tips...

Learn your material.

Make eye contact. Don't sit there eyes down reading from a prepared pitch.

Smile.

Ask questions. Make it interactive rather than a lecture. Praise people for their answers.

Use visuals and talk about the visuals rather than slide after slide of bullet points.

Have fun with it. Nobody wants you to fail up there.

Stay on schedule. Maintain control. If someone drags down the discussion cut them off with "let's take this offline, I'd be happy to explore deeper with you but we need to stay on track".

Pay attention to your audience. If they seem really interested in one thing and not interest in another, slow down and speed up to accommodate their interests. But finish on time.

I don't know how good I am, but in terms of shyness, I was so shy as a teen. I was afraid to pick up the phone.

But for theater and public speaking, I wasn't shy at all! I was totally ready, because I could rehearse everything. The only part that scared me back then was Q&A, since I didn't know what questions the audience could ask.

I was opposite that way. I was more afraid of people inviting me to a party after a public speech than the public speech. I really loved public speaking (still do). I know what I'm going to say in advance even though I don't read my notes. I just put one word notes and improvise from there.

I've never given a massive public speech outside of a small one at this computer graphics convention called SIGGRAPH. But I really enjoyed it. These days I'm down to chat after -- I'm not so shy anymore. When I was shy though, I still didn't mind public speaking -- it's just that I'd be afraid if you approached me and wanted to talk to me privately because I couldn't anticipate what you'd say and know how to respond.

for someone who grew up an extremely shy kind and young teen and not being a fan of crowds at all...

I was surprisingly good at speaking to an audience, I was one of them few that could read, enunciate and actually memorize an speech at kindergarten, so even as young as five or six... I was FORCED to do so, because moms thought it was the cutest thing ever

Got a script in front of me, I'll follow or fumble my way through it. That is the hard part. The people I don't give a fuck. The people are there for a reason expecting the best speech i can give which isn't much.

It's not like Martin Luther King Jr is the warm up act before Me. I'm just a dumb fuck doing my best. That alone is beyond good enough for what ever crowd I'll ever speak towards.

I have done this and given briefings and don't find it that hard as long as I am aware of my purpose there. I've been to meetings where I was new and then expected to stand up and speak to over 1000 people in a hall and that was a bit rattling but winging it on my the fly is kinda part of my job (s)

Haven't been great at it for the most part in my life. But the speech I gave at a friend's wedding had everyone laughing and a few people came up to me saying they loved it, so I can have my moments when I put the effort in.

I've done so in class, as I think most people will have done at some point in their youth.

I've made presentations in front of 50, 60 people. The first time it's odd, then you get used to it.

I didn't have any public speaking experience before that, other than presenting my senior thesis before the other seniors in my major while in college. The first day of class I had a big cup of water on my desk so I wouldn't get dry mouth. Before starting to speak, I took a drink of water - and dribbled it down my chin and onto my shirt. The students were kind of looking at me like, who is this doofus LOL.
