I don't think it will be only tariffs that will cause the recession. International tourism to the US was down 11% in March and future bookings in Sept are down around 70%. Flights to the US are being cancelled. Nobody outside the US wants to buy American exports anymore. Any goodwill built around the world by previous administrations was destroyed in less than 100 days. Trump could and likely will cave on tariffs and there will likely be a recession because the rest of the world has turned on the US and is preparing a new global marketplace without Americans. The new reality is people outside the US don't want to travel there and don't want US exports anymore and that's enough to being a recession

2 quarters of declining gdp. I'd say yes,... reductions in purchasing in many areas and market going down means people tighten wallets somewhat. We were already way over priced.

however, I have to wonder what counter balance there is in spending... I hear deficit going wrong direction... an additional $1 trillion. If they get $ into building new infrastructure... power plants, equipment, factories... he's got $4+ trillion committed from businesses... and that happens quickly,

maybe not.

but so what, people still feel the pinch as trade shifts and costs increase... more inflation in areas we are used to being cheap as well as things that doubled, like insurance.

You're not paying attention. We are not staring at another ho hum recession. We are staring at something much worse. A new depression. Go read the definition of a recession and a depression. Then go look at every asset class currently. Stocks, corporate bonds, government t-bills, real estate, raw materials, manufactured goods, everything. Then go look at what banks are saying about bad debt they see increasing and their cash reserves being insufficient with no ability to adjust given the pace of the collapse.

I do not think that, although I can't honestly base that on too much more than a gut instinct.

I think that people who are (very understandably) concerned about a recession are used to the economic system functioning a certain way, and they cannot imagine a reality where the economy doesn't need to function the way it has in the past. If the global economic system stayed the same, then Trump's plan would result in a choked economy.

Trump's proposal makes economic sense, but you kind of have to restructure the global market's incentive system. On one hand, that's a really tall order and most people would agree that that's as good as saying Trump's plan is a fairy tale. On the other hand... Trump is making that restructure happen... so... I don't know, man.

No. Most experts who previously predicted the likelihood of a recession at more than 50% are now saying a recession is less than 50% probable.
