In Chicago Teachers demanded a pay raise, to "Unlock student success". They got a 70% pay raise to 100k annually. And it didn't improve things. It made things worse. Especially for black students who only 11% are literate.

The image im going to show blames DEI.. I dont know if DEI is to blame, But i do believe that incentivizing already incompetent teachers with more money only makes them worse. Personally i believe ALL of these educators should be fired for failing our black students.

That's terrible. I think ultimately teachers are being asked to do to much. Some of the teachers I know talk of endless paperwork not related to educating kids as well as endless Teaching courses. Teaching isn't attracting the best anymore, for the level of education required to become a teacher is the equivalent of a $100,000 a year job.

This is a problem in Britain too. Ultimately the money isn't the problem but instead the problem starts with parents. Schools that have very little parent involvement in schools or at home have low education rates. A lot of schools now are becoming glorified daycare centres. I got pulled from the school is attended in England because it was becoming a warzone. Bullying was rife. Male students were getting stabbed on their way home, girls were getting gang raped. There was all this nonsense being taught unrelated to our GCSEs that was just taking up time. Honestly I did more school work at home in 3 hours than I did in a whole school day. I had my GSCSEs done by 14 and my A levels by 16.

The other days I heard someone say that a third of Americans are illiterate. Not sure if it’s true but that 11% doesn’t surprise me. It’s not always the teachers’ fault, although they have their part to play too.

That's horrible. It's a cultural problem in the Black community. Teachers can't fix that. It's sad that the socialist have destroyed Black America to what is essential a point of no return. For kids to learn, the parents have to want them to learn and they have to help them learn. If the parents can't read, then the kids will never read if they stay in the parent's household. If only 11% are learning, they will obviously try to leave the community for better opportunity and the numbers will get worse each generation until you have entire communities of Blacks who are illiterate.

It's getting close to 50% flat out total population can't read a book even entering college. So it's a larger problem then any one demographic.

I'm one of those people. I can read each and every word. Put together it gets lost reading the next page. It's supposed to mesh together as a whole story but I'm too focused on the next word.

Its the only reason why I use this website to practice any level of reading and writing. It's actually a scary problem.

@seeyounexttuesday You are making the false assumption that all failures are for the same reason. It is less than 89%. Based on the Standard Deviation, it is more like 75% of 80%. Some students have the capacity but don't try, or else there are other issues.

The statistic is a bit misleading. The headline says 'proficient in reading.' So, they may be able to read, they are just too dumb to comprehend what they just read.
