Why are candles so expensive?

That’s a scented candle, so you’re paying for the perfumes alongside the labor it takes to make the colored wax. Also, Yankee Candle is a name brand, notoriously not a cheap candle to buy. It’s also fairly large. A smaller, unscented candle without colored wax is undoubtedly going to be cheaper.

They're expensive because you'll buy them, based on the myth that they're somehow better. Yankee Candles have been well known for leaving soot residue on walls and ceilings, which they blame on improper use. Point is, you shouldn't have to worry about monitoring the wick burn pattern on your candles if they're made properly.

Because people buy them. You can find candles just as good for a fraction of that price. It's like restaurants too tho... a restaurant with a great PR game and good reputation can charge more than one that never does any marketing and few people know about it.
