No the press should absolutely not be regulated by the government, although removing some of the protections from the press from being sued when they knowingly lie I would be all for.

What really needs to happen is that news outlets need to be licensed like the FCC used to license TV and radio stations. If a news outlet does not operate in "the public interest" the government could refuse to renew the license.
