A Hillbilly is a person who's family is from the Appalachian Mountains, which typically means they are from German immigrant descent. Hill + Billy (William) which is a name of Germanic origin (cognates: Old High German Willahelm, German Wilhelm).

A Redneck is a West Virginia union coal miner who typically has family ties back to the Battle of Blair Mountain.

If you use the terms properly, they make sense. If you use them improperly, you sound dumb, which is hilarious because they were popularized by newspaper men in New York City that didn't even know what the words meant. The city people showed off their stupidity and tried to use the terms as derogatory terms for uneducated southern people, when it was actually the New Yorkers that were the uneducated one. Other stupid city people adopted the terms via media brainwashing and as a result they all became dumber.

As a result in class/race conflict, blacks for example started using the words improperly trying to insult whites because that is what they were told they were meant by master in NYC. Which lead people who actually knew the meaning of the words to ask the question, is that boy retarded? He sure sounds ignorant using all these words wrong. He must not have an education. He must have an inferior mind... So of course that adds fuel to the fire of the word n! gg3r being associated with ignorant or shiftless people. That boys sure is dumb. He never finished his schooling and can't find work.
