Why do you think people choose to live in the past instead of the present?

Depends on the who is living in the past and how they continue to live in the past.

I think those that spend less time on social media, less time on a smartphone, and are happy enough in a minimalist lifestyle with radio, paper & pen, and bookshelf then by all means good on them and continue doing what works.

A lot of people who are stuck in the past like “I wished I did ____ “ and “I should’ve told ___ how much I loved them, etc.” are stuck in the past because they don’t know how good they have it in the present. ‘These are your golden years, you shouldn’t chase your wasted years’.

Some people live in the past because it was a happy time for them. Its better than their present so they try to mentally stay there.

Others are haunted and traumatized by their past and are stuck there... until they heal.

stuck emotionally... controlled by the past. emotional brain does not want to let go.

some more than others... we are all kinda AI... programmed, with some ability to reprogram but we can't see our programming very well.

People tend to edit their memories, forgetting the bad stuff and romanticizing the good stuff. 20 years after the fact your memories are so distorted that the past becomes a fantasy. Most people would rather cling to a fantasy of yesterday than deal with the reality in front of them today. And most people are not self aware enough to admit to themselves that their memories are not some literal recording of the past.

Nowadays, everyone is fed up because everything is so easily accessible. In the past, everything was limited, but there was sincerity, seriousness, morality, and respect. Today, we long for these feelings.
