@Melanie31 Keep in mind that Germany is STILL rebuilding from the war, and I only learned that when I was in Germany last July, and toured most of the country. I have to say that WE in the US, are more independent, than Germany, as they are at the mercy of Russian for energy, as when I was there, they turned off the AC at some point in the night, due to restrictions in energy usage.

As far as 'development' I think at this point in history, we are ahead.

We are not rebuilding from the war, what the hell? This ain't the 1970s! There are very few, unique building that were lost in the bombing of cities that were replaced by faceless postwar buildings, that are now - as the replacement building is old itself - recreated from old plans. This has nothing to do with war damages.

Only in the sense of re-creating the old 1900s cityscape with a few historically distinguished buildings, not in the sense of cleaning up war rubble! Come on, man!

@DryGermanGuy I understand that... I never intended to mean. "cleaning up war rubble" I don't think you really thought that I meant that... I visited the Cathedral at Cologne, and hope that majestic structure was NOT damaged by the war.

You used the word "still", so to me that could only mean "rebuilding from 1945 onward", no? But okay, we could clear it up, let's call it a lost-in-translation moment between that tourist guide and your group.
I had to check Wikipedia about Cologne and apparently the cathedral received quite its share of bombing damage:

There are things that America is more devolved on and there are things Germany is more devolved on. But I been America over all is more developed overall.

If you are asking "which country is more built-out", that would be Germany. Germany is a much smaller place with a much higher number of people per unit of land than the US. This means more of the land has been built upon and there is less open space compared to the US.

If you're asking "which country is more technologically advanced", that would be the US, though the difference really isn't all that large. Germany is a Western country that has access to western technology, and because so much of the country was destroyed in WWII, most of the buildings and infrastructure have been rebuilt post-WWII, which means that you don't have a lot of pre-war infrastructure that holds back new technology. The main technology differences would be in areas like aerospace and advanced communications products (networking, satellite tech, data centers, etc.). These things don't DIRECTLY impact most people in their daily lives, though there is some eventual impact over time.

Really just the most cutting edge stuff. The stuff that requires the massive budgets. It's not an indictment on German tech - Germany has long had some of the best scientific minds. But many of them move to the US to work on projects that Germany just can't fund.

For its average citizen, Germany, no doubt about it. I have seen poor American villages in the South that still had open sewers. And as a multi-billionaire-trillionaire, I'm not sure what fancy thing you could buy or build in the United States that you couldn't have in Germany?

Germany is the richest country in Europe, while paying off two world wars and one reunification. We are leaders in research and innovation. Everyone buys our products, worldwide. If you need to play word games, gladly exchange "average" for "majority of citizens" and "villages" for "unincorporated communities". Doesn't change a thing. There is also no such thing as a European way of living, as our 40+ countries are too vastly different and diverse.

@beefcakebradybatson: You might think that from the hysterical reaction in the German media to the tariffs, but Germany’s energy policies are a much bigger threat to a country that focuses on high-end manufacturing and is now finally feeling the bite from Chinese competition. Although it has by far the largest GDP, Germany isn’t the richest country in Europe.
DryGermanyGuy’s reaction is typical (some truth to what he says but ignores the challenges German industry and society face).

There has been no "hysterical reaction", economical commentators in Germany and elsewhere just know that Trump's tariff announcements, un-announcements and re-announcements are idiotic and they say so. Especially idiotic with the MAGAdonians believing that foreign states would have to pay the tariffs.
Also you are not up to date - Germany has reshaped their energy import infrastructure and mix within two years to no longer contain any Russian oil/gas products, while still keeping prices at pre-war levels. Currently the new German administration is working on legislature to even forbid any new Russian imports, because they heard through the political grapevine that that might be something Trump could offer to Putin.

DryGermanGuy, America is a Third World country with massively unequal wealth distribution and a criminally over-bloated military. In other words, it resembles the latter days of the former Soviet Union

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a third world country, but yes, the wealth distribution between the top 1-10% of Americans and the large majority and its consequences are mind boggling. As is the tendency in that large majority to constantly yell "'Murrica number one!!!" while ignoring/denying every metric that would show them how far away they are from number one. For example, the GDP/capita obfuscation was posted by someone here.

Germany’s infrastructure spending has been subpar for the past 25 years or so, but it’s got much better roads than the US, although investment declined there during the Merkel years). I guess they’ve finally improved their high-speed Internet connections (this was an area in which it was a laggard 8 years ago). Public transportation is obviously much better, although Germany is helped by being much more compact and densely populated from the US.

if the Merz government is able to follow through on its plans, there will be large improvements in infrastructure.

The U. S. makes more money, but Germany provides a better overall quality of life for its citizens. So, who's more "developed"? Depends on what you value more.

Human Development Index backs that up too—Germany's ranked 5th while the US is sitting at 17th.

Overall the U. S is.. Although it does have higher highs and lower lows, but that's because each state is ran differently, and has certain types of populations.. Naturally a huge country with different types of cultures can't really compare a lot to a smaller country like Germany..

Germany ranks 9th in the HDI ranking, while the US ranks 21st. Of course, we should not forget that the US is a country of 330 million. Similarly, China, despite having a large industry, is not in the developed country category because it has a population of 1.4 billion. The US is in the developed country category despite being 21st. My country, Turkey, is 48th in the HDI ranking.

It's an impossible comparison because the size difference between countries is huge. Germany is like a tiny island, compared to the US.
