This concerns a NYS PTA suggested questionnaire about the NYS phone ban in schools. The question to be put to parents, students & teachers is:

"What considerations, concerns, or suggestions do you have regarding a) storage of student devices during the school day b) consequences for policy violations, and c) how we can address differing viewpoints about the ban?"

The OVERWHELMING majority of responses NYSPTA has received so far is along the lines of "I need to be in touch with my kid during emergencies & family logistics ". Problem is it's a multiparty question with a binary choice!

The Q is about STORAGE & CONSEQUENCES, NOT how you feel about the new law. They are soliciting IMPLEMENTABLE SOLUTIONS that the communities can live with.

How do I say my opinion without endorsing or opposing this non answer? Why do modern parents need to project their anxiety & narcissism into EVERYTHING?

It appears to be managed by cognitively impaired PTA dimwits. A multi part question is actually 3 separate questions. There should at least be a YES/NO binary option for each question. But even then, they are asking questions that beg some form of written response detailing ideas, not a YES/NO checkbox.

I honestly don't see a way to replay in any meaningful way if all you have is a form with a 2 check boxes.

I think kids should be allowed to have their phones in school but and here's the big thing at no point should theh be ever used in class except to call for an ambulance or for a school shooting. A zero tolerance in kids playing with them in class. If you can't be relied upon to put your phone away during class then you can't come to class.

I'm not sure what family logistics or emergency would require a child to have a phone on in class, parents should be able to phone the school which would require dialogue with the school to allow the child to leave in the first place. I get that schools don't want teachers who are abusive or losing their marbles in class to be videoed or lessons taught in school that parents aren't aware of to be taught either.

I think it ultimately comes down to common sense. A 14 year old with a phone should be able to put it away during class.

When I taught in college 37 years ago, I fortunately did not have to worry about smartphones. If I taught today, I'd consider getting an illegal phone jammer; when I teach, you ain't surfing...

For all these parents getting bent out of shape about needing to get in touch with there kids in an emergency, well, 50 years ago, parents weren't bent out of shape about it. They called the school who then took appropriate action with the student. That's the way it should be.

If I was to DESIGN a school today, each classroom would be like an ersatz Faraday cage; cell phone signals would be weak to the point of no service. It's not deliberate illegal phone jamming, but the phones won't work other than "airplane mode".

Yes, I contribute to the conversation by adding my take as to No/Yes or center lane where it is more complicated than a straightforward Yes/No response.

I believe everyone has their own views, perspectives, opinions and it deserves to be heard and taken into consideration even when it goes against our own beliefs on a given topic. Allows us to find more routes to navigate and explore.

@ in the city where I work they are buying pouches for all the kid's phones that they store their phone in. It has a material that blocks radio waves. Only the principals office has the key. However , if you look online the keys are pretty easy to make. I cannot imagine that this is a workable solution.
