I wouldn't worry about it.
Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) is a very effective tool for maintaining the peace.
In fact, it was advocated by the recently deceased Richard Garwin (he died last month at age 97). Garwin is the actual designer of the first hydrogen bomb and he counseled Presidents for decades.
The only real concern about nuclear weapons involves dictators or terrorist groups. However, most dictators are intelligent enough to understand MAD. So, this leaves terrorist groups and they would not have a lot of nuclear weapons. Upon use, such a group would be hunted to extermination much like the USA hunted down Bin Laden making him fish food.
You don't piss off those who can take you out. It's suicide. And human nature is such that people may be civil and restrained even in war, but once you get kicked in the nuts, nothing short of death satisfies the sense of justice.
LOL... oh wow, well that qualifies for immediate publishing in a peer-reviewed journal.

HOWEVER, without asserting that I agree with you about the US interfering in Russia's nuclear systems, I will give you a history lesson about something somewhat similar.
First, I need to come clean a bit. From July 1992 through January 1994, I worked at a space and defense think tank called The Aerospace Corporation. It's an "FFRDC" which stands for "Federally-Funded Research and Development Center". It's a non-profit organization which provides advice to the Federal Government (primarily what was then the Air Force) about space and aerospace issues. ("Circle-A" is its nickname because of its logo; it's original URL was aero. org.) I had a DoD Secret Clearance.

Now, something you need to know about the defense industry is that knowledge is only shared on a need-to-know basis. For instance, there's a building on the Aerospace campus called "A5" (I worked in D3). A5 is surrounded by guards with weapons and fencing including barbed wire IIRC. I went into the foyer of A5 once just to see. I asked what they did in A5. "You don't need to know that." In fact, not only did you have to have a Top Secret clearance for A5, you needed to have "A5 Clearance" which was even more restrictive and you wouldn't know who has A5 clearance just from looking at their badge. I looked in the company phone book for A5-related info. The only things listed were "Directorate A, Directorate B, etc." Nothing else. No names and nothing descriptive; just an internal phone number. My point in mentioning is that clandestine efforts by the USA and other nations are really pretty good. Especially in the US. If the US was tampering with Russian nuclear systems, you wouldn't "know what happened". I don't know how to put it but working in defense is a form of insanity and paranoia. If something bad can happen, somebody's thinking about it. If something bad you can make happen to an enemy, somebody's thinking that up. Everyone is a potential enemy. Anything can go wrong. The ideal defense mindset is a robotic prime directive of "protect no matter what the cost".

Now, here's the historical example I wanted to discuss.
Look-up "Korean Airlines (KAL) 007" from September 1983.
What happened is the plan, going from Anchorage AK to Seoul ROK accidentally flew over the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of the Soviet Union. A Soviet fighter aircraft intercepted the plane, checked it out, and then fired upon it causing it to crash killing everyone on board. There was enormous outrage over this especially since this was obviously not a military aircraft (it was a Boeing 747 with KAL insignia). What is not obvious in this description is what is important militarily.

When the US went public with transcripts of the intercepted communications, what they really did was tell the world and the Soviet Union in particular "Hey, we can understand your secret communications."
This wasn't just embarrasing for the Soviet Union that they got caught lying. They also got embarrased knowing that the US had this capability.
Here's the problem and the lesson to be learned...
Ordinarily, the US would not reveal that they could intercept and understand Soviet communications. You don't want them to know that because, once they do, they'll become aware you can do that and take action so you can't do that anymore.
However, in this case, Reagan felt it was important for the cause of the West in the Cold War to reveal the Soviets as the lying murderers they were.
This incident had a major impact on the Cold War and Reagan's re-election.

1st, of all, WW means World War,
2nd, so therefore this is all nations, and with what you have quite rightly pointed out nuclear.
There are many nations in this country that possess nuclear weapons and the United Kingdom where I live also has them.
This is not a case of how many Americans but how many innocent human beings will die.
My own personal opinion is that the volatile nature of world leaders at the moment, it wouldn’t surprise me if World War 3 is only three - five years down the road.
It’s sad, and yet again, at the expense of innocent people’s lives World wide!
95% of Americans die in under a year and they don’t need nukes to do it. Destroy the power grids and this country folds in hours. The number of people here who are meaningfully resourceful enough to fend for themselves without a computer or smartphone is abysmal. The entire democrat party dies first. Millions of people whose entire political platform is complete reliance on the government? 😂😂😂😂

If indeed some idiots are foolish enough to launch nukes - the winners will be the underdeveloped countries off the tracks. That's what the overdeveloped ones are not at all interested in.
If it does happen, all of Congress and Trump will survive in their shelters while the rest of us poor slobs will die. But the joke is on them. With no one to govern they will just have themselves to fight with. We haven't attacked Russia yet even though we probably should at this point but as for WW3 almost being here yes, I think it will actually be in the next year a two at most. I've been following Ukraine and the Isreal conflicts since day 1 every single day blow for blow. That said it won't be Iran that does it. Russia is going to attack either Latvia, Lithuania Estonia, Finland or all of them and China is going to attack Tiawan at the same time.
The US has the best military in the world with the ability to destroy the planed several times over. The US has weapons in it's arsenal that are so deadly it cannot be imagined. President Trump is also going to have the military build a state of the are missile defense system so the country will have a level of defense the rest of the world will not have.
I don't think a WW3 scenario is likely. Just a couple of tactical nuclear attacks would shortly see an end of hostilities. It's LIKELY US will be involved given they are the only ones to use those weapons
I would predict that an EMP explosion would be worst than a nuclear bomb closer to the ground. Taking out most or all electrical devices. Allowing the country to go back to the dark ages without computers, cell phones and even cars to self destruct from the inside out. Then the concurring country could still grow food and occupy the land.
Nuclear war would bring the human population down to 1-5%

The next World War would be more Cyber Warfare than anything.. It's highly doubtful any countries will be springing out Nukes anytime soon.. Especially since some countries have a huge monopoly on military power..
