The quick break down here is that Smith worked as a nurse at Emory University Hospital, and she had to be admitted back in February, which was when doctors discovered blood clots in her brain. with her then shortly afterwards, being declared braindead. Her family wanted to take her off life support, considering that she had no hope of recovery, but the staff at Emory University Hospital wouldn't allow it because Smith was eight weeks pregnant and they were scared that they could be accused of causing an abortion by removing her from life support. Georgia's law bans all abortions if any cardiac activity is detected, which can be as early as six weeks. So early that many women may not even realize that they're pregnant. She gave birth via C-section and her baby weighed just 1 pound 13oz. which is extremely small for a baby, even a premature one. The baby is now in the neonatal intensive care unit, though fortunately, at least according to his grandmother, he's expected to be okay.

I should mention that not only did Adriana have a will that states to not keep her physically alive once brain dead, but that her family which was given legal power over her once she was declared to be brain dead, also wanted the plug to be pulled. Nobody who had any knowledge of it wanted her to be kept physically alive.

I'm not prolifer at all. I will abort if I get pregs as I can't take contraception anymore without adverse effects. BUT in this case i have to admit it doesn't sound dreadful. If that baby lives the family get to keep a piece of their daughter alive through the child. As long as the child is healthy and will have a network of good people raising him/her. Because otherwise if he/she is damaged mentally/physically from this forced pregnancy and has a miserable life thanks to just thinking about anti abortion laws over the quality life of the baby in a bigger context then that's where I think pro lifers fail. Just being born is not good enough if what follows is hell. Like a baby forced to be born by someone clearly not wanting it and hating it enough to give it a neglected shitty upbringing. Pro lifers fail to take into account that life, the willingness to live, is more than blood in the veins and a heart beating.

I lost a baby once that I did want. And I think about her every year at least as I miscarried on Christmas day. That was different. If I get pregnant I will know within a week or two of missing my period so aborting would be very very early. There would be nothing to think about. No he/she. No name. No connection.

If that ever happens to me I want my baby to survive and get a chance. When I was pregnant I actually discussed this with my partner, I told him that if it ever came down to choice between me and the baby then choose the baby.

No, but the time and energy keeping her body alive meant that the same time and energy couldn't be given to those already alive.

That is not true. People that do this work and I am one of them. Do not subtract time from one patient to care for another one. We do what we can do for as long as we can do it. And when we are exhausted or saturated the work is assigned to another person who is available. Your objection is trivial.

It was a good allocation in that not providing it would have resulted in the death of the unborn child. We do not do things like that because they are immoral and often illegal.

So, basically once someone is pregnant, they have no legal right to decide what to do with their body. That's pretty much what you're saying. Also, it's pure luck that the kid wasn't dead kn delivery considering its size and weight. Hopefully it has more that just the grandmother as family, or else it will be in the system as an adolescent.

When someone is pregnant, that does not mean they then have the legal right to murder the baby. Same thing when they are dead. You do not have the legal right to murder babies at any time even if they might cost you money.

They were able to keep the mother alive long enough to let her baby be born and then let her die as per her wishes. If I was the woman in question I hope that they would do the exact same thing.

So they should keep her alive with drugs and machines for 8 months? There are many risks to the baby, which you clearly think is worth to try. Fine..

Let's say insurance doesn't cover all of this? Who should pay? Also, if the baby is born with multiple health issues, who pays for that, and all the support the single parent that has to take care of it? Even if the baby does survive and is healthy, who pays for all this? Insurance will not cover the majority of it.

My point is the doctor's and the surviving parent as well as the wishes of the mom should be taken into consideration to way their options and as tough as it is to decide, this decision should not be the governments unless they want to pay for all incurred expenses in this particular scenario.

That's not what I asked you. I am not trying to change your mind. I explained I think differently than there's more than just a moral obligation. I'm referring to the financial obligation that is now being forced onto someone in your scenario. My question is who pays for the medical bills to keep the mother and baby alive as well as potential bankrupting healthcare costs that could be incurred if the baby is born with massive health issues? I just want to know if you think, the possible single parent that's left is responsible for the financial collapse that would be handed to them in this exact scenario? Since the government and the law forces this pregnancy to term who pays?

Mother's insurance if she had it at the time of the blood clot. Her estate if she didn't. The hospital eats it if her estate can't cover the whole bill.
