The Green, Constitution, and Libertarian parties are the prominent third parties. Though they rarely win anything more than local elections. However, some of the third party politicians run as a Republican or Democrat; like Bernie Sanders and Rand Paul.

Money. Nobody gets elected without money. And both parties are money machines.

Trump would have struggled to get elected without the Republican party behind him. Trump would had to have spent his own money. And the parties coffers run deep. The ONLY reason why Trump would still have had a small chance is 1. He was polarizing. Many of his supporters are rabid and loyal. And 2. He already had solid notoriety. Most people in this country already knew the name "Trump" before he even ran.

But back to the money. Money by advertising and airtime. And despite what people want to believe they are easily led and swayed. It doesn't matter what the truth is. There are 10 lies out there for every 1 truth. You repeat the lie long enough times it becomes the truth in popular opinion.

I bring up Trump because I don't care whether you are for or against him. He said it himself in the first election. He said, "I could shoot a guy in the middle of the street and I wouldn't lose a single vote" because Trump is smart enough to know he's a protest vote. Most of the people who vote for him in thier heart of hearts aren't voting for Trump. They voting against the democrats. Most are voting against the Republican party as well. Trump just happens to be their horse.

Its an unintended consequence of how voting works in USA. The way power is given based on votes means that there is one leading candidate and the one who is most likely to beat them becomes the challenger. Voting for a 3rd party that can't beat the one in first place means that your vote changes nothing. Your only choice is to vote for the leader to extend their lead or the challenger to overtake the leader.

If for example we had a system where you get power in proportions to how many votes you have then you can have more parties. If the Democrats and Republicans each gets 40% of the votes then they could be given 40% of the seats in congress with the remaining 20% being split with whatever party got the rest of the votes. As such you dont need to be first to get power and if you vote for someone who will "lose" then your vote is not wasted and will still give them some power to act in your best interest.

There are several minority parties, but both major parties have done a great deal to suppress their exposure. All the money is in the democripps and rebloodlicans parties. Money is how elections are won. Winning elections in turn awards wealth and power.

Because we allow private donations to fund political parties. it's easier for the rich people to keep us under control by concentrating their money and resources on too equally self serving groups. multiple options or ranked elections dockets, and shared public money for campaigns... and politicians would have to run on what they do and not what they say.

Sure there are others. Trump was in a third party! But libertarian have dumb policy, and demicrats are harmful so trump is the least evil. Most people wanted trump policy... in 2024 and 2020 too but those mail in ballots... you know.

We have has independent candidates like Ross Perot and George Wallace. They got a good amount of votes but probably did not have the finances to win.
