Did French really invent tongue kissing?

She commanded me to ask this question, so here I am. Tongue kissing, sometimes called french kissing. Except in France, where we don't call this french kissing at all. That would be weird. We don't even really using names for that activity at all, usually. But it has a french name yes.

So, yeah, what's the story here, history of tongue kissing, in your educated or uneducated opinion? I accept factual data too. Good luck 🍀

the name itself, or rather... the term, was coined by the Brits and Americans

being the Brits and Americans more prudish and puritans in general and in comparison with the French... they just felt the need to call it in such way

"do it like the French do it... "

I relate to that, I can see myself clashing culturally with UK and US people, on average, about many things romance and sexuality. About anything involving warmth of character it seems

Hell yeah, I clashed with Brit cuisine a lot when I set a foot there. Cheddar was an awful discovery, blasphemous even. And their mayonnaise tasted like tequila. What the fuck, guys? 😢

hahaha yep I heard you saying something elaborate about tequila. I admit I think that tequila is as boring as vodka, flat and bland, but my experience is also very restricted on the matter

the vast majority of what is sold as tequila around the world... is not actual tequila but a commercial and very cheap version of it and full of fake sugars, not even real sugar either

actual, authentic tequila is a rich spirit that has to be certified as original to the region by the same name... Tequila, lol

All right, I'll probably never encounter a bottle of certified Tequila then, because my physiological interest in alcohol doesn't extend very far. And especially not overseas. But it's good be aware of new appearances, in principle :)

My educated and fact based insight is:

It's called ''French'' since the Roman conquerors who were heading north-west discovered that biting each other isn't as exciting as a good tongue work.

But there's something special to the French, surely. My daughter aged 14 had a school exchange trip to France where she met a guy she liked a lot. There - she had her first kiss. And she returned... what can I say... radiating excitement. Nothing ''wrong'' had happened.

Ummm I would not go this direction, there's a strong element of prudishness in US culture. Something that is probably much less prominent here?

I mean when we look at their music video there's nothing prudish in them, it really depend on what American media we look at but Nicky Minaj and such it's ways worse that what we can see in Europe in general
Or Doja cat too is not very prudish, as a child I always thought American were pretty depraved because of how much sexuality and stuff they showed (my mother hated it so much). In Video games too it's pretty sexualized (like the clothes and body in Batman Arkham and in comics in general) plus the sexy outfit in movie of the 2000s were pretty wild.

So they're prudish when it arrange them in my opinion but on other media they go all out.

There is some sort of wild arrangement US culture is making, between prudishness and hypersexuality. I have a good friend in the US who considers that they are structured like cultural pockets, meaning there would be a pocket of prudish region, next to a much wilder region, etc. etc.

Do you think one person started "French kissing" and then the idea spread? DO you think that the person who created the idea got written up in the newspaper so that we can research and learn its origins?

I believe it's named this way because the French are very oral people. Some used to refer to oral sex as French. And anal as Greek.

I seem to recall Penthouse Forum, back in the 70s, used French and Greek for those two. That was a section of Penthouse magazine that was like Playboy where people wrote in telling about their wild sexcapades.

From a french perspective, I haven't heard of any french considering us as inventors of french fries, in fact we usually point a finger at Belgium instead. They seem to be responsible for french fries, not us lol
