Do people actually save money or are many people living off credit cards? financial assistance from other people or places? or check to check?

I save. But it took me till I was about 40 to get to this point. It wasn't till my net worth hit about a half million that I started viewing the world differently. Being poor is a mindset. I'm not blaming people who are poor. If you're always worrying about just keeping your head above water you're never going to break that mindset. I don't even view it as making money anymore. Because how much I make is always contigent on opportunities. But I'm always focused on what the market is returning, inflation, and how I'm performing in relation to it. Because to me that is the real measure of success. I wouldn't even call myself a very successful investor. But I continue to improve each year. And that's what matters to me.

I’m saving money, but i’m a statistical anomaly. The majority of US citizens carry at least some credit card debt and/or live check to check. A great many also live in abject poverty.
It’s important to note that they leave mortgages and auto loans out of the statistics. Otherwise the crisis would be undeniable. There was a time when only the wealthiest people and business owners functioned on debt of any kind. They want people to feel like financial slavery is normal.

I cut my cards up last nov. They are too tempting in difficult times. If I need to use them I will order a new card which would allow me a couple days to either find the funds or realize it is a real need in that event.

People do, some people don't. Depends on a lot of things.

Some people do save money. The easiest way is by an automatic payroll deduction. I have been working as a software developer for about 30 years and my retirement accounts are closer to a million pre-tax.

Yes people actually do save. I know I do. I try put $1500 in my investments. I take care of my truck payment, groceries, utilizes, then left w quite a bit after each month that I may put away another $1000. But it’s taken time to learn how to do this, to earn it. I have a budget so I know where all my money is going.

If I needed more money, I just got another job.
My credit cards are paid in full each month.
If I don't have the money I don't spend it.
