I don't get it. Why is half this stuff even an issue? I don't think native Americans have problems with sports teams being called "The Indians", "The Braves", the "Redskins", or any other name. So what's the deal?

Ok, so…. first off: I’m a guy who loves Native American imagery. I’m wearing a necklace with a totem pole on it as we speak. I made all kinds of custom teams on the NCAA Football ‘10-‘14 video game, and some of them had native imagery/names, but nothing decidedly offensive and disrespectful, I think they were usually tribally based, and most importantly, alliterative with city or region I wanted them to represent. “Chattanooga Choctaws”, something like that. And even though they were mostly personal use, I made sure that the tribe could’ve been conceivably local to that area.
I’d say a key facet of my appreciation of Native American stuff is that I respect them. So I endeavor to not make them cartoon characters of savages or like folklorish mystics. I try to be aware that they’re people who live here, now in small numbers, relegated to reservations in a lot of cases, and it’s totally fucked there. And I won’t go into all the history we all know about, but the bottom line is they’re supposed to be here and the rest of us aren’t. And it is what it is now, to some degree, but let’s not trample what’s left of them, or leave them to be forgotten.
I thought this was a great piece, probably well over ten years old now….
https://www.youtube.com/embed/loK2DRBnk24As you can see, some Natives DO take issue with it. And I guess I can’t say for absolute sure but people claiming to have some fraction of Native heritage are usually full of shit, lmfao. They say it to sound more exotic, which is ironic, because Native American is as un-exotic as you can be as an American, lmao. And it’s ALWAYS Cherokee. That’s when I really start calling bullshit. Cherokee every time, lmfao, these fucking simpletons🤦♂️
But anyway, without going too ruthlessly long, here’s my umbrella problem with most “anti-woke” talk: it all seems predicated on “well, as long as white people/men/heterosexuals [based on who the offended party is] aren’t offended, then any complaints are bullshit and should be dismissed as ‘woke’ nonsense.”
We can’t have any kind of social situation where not annoying the majority/dominant demographic with asking them to be more respectful outweighs not offending the people who are actually directly offended, and the majority/dominant demographic can’t have final clearance on if it’s valid for them to feel that way or not. It’s too easy to dismiss valid issues as nonsense when you have the huge blind spots that anyone with social privilege is very often going to have.
I have so many questions about “anti-wokeness” that I’ll just save for a question of my own, but I’m just so surprised that allegedly “woke” ideology is just asking people to be kind and respectful and empathetic, and the people least affected by discrimination in this country are just like “LOL, no”, and we throw our hands up like “welp…. majority rules, too bad, so sad.”
”The right to be an abhorrent human being with little, no, or demographically-selective empathy” is the WEIRDEST fucking hill I could ever imagine someone wanting to die on…
No natives take issue with it. Only white liberals do. 🤦♂️
@Kingofkings1992 literally posted a video of Natives who do🤦♂️
😂😂😂🤡
@Kingofkings1992 solid retort, lmfao
That’s the only retort that video deserves lmfao 😂
@Kingofkings1992 so the Natives in that video are lying and are NOT offended? I’m not sure what you’re asserting here
Where in the video does it show actual Natives who are actually offended? Can I get a time stamp please? Because all I’m seeing is a comedy bit
@Kingofkings1992 They’re in the entire video after 1:40
@Kingofkings1992 Bullshit. Stop getting your information from Jesse "I'm a closet gay" Watters and Fox Entertainment
@loveslongnails never watch Fox News, but nice try lol
@Kingofkings1992 Shocking, but so what, you still don't know wtf you're talking about. I do, and so does my partner, since she IS a tribal member. Go educate yourself, if that's even possible.
@loveslongnails yes, yes. With you, “educate yourself” is synonymous with “become indoctrinated like me.” Lmao
@Kingofkings1992 Still, you refuse to explore any other tribal information regarding your misinformation. You only the tidbits that support your ignorance. You can't even see how ironic and stupid it is that you, a maga trump cultist, calls ANYONE else indoctrinated. LOL
@loveslongnails I’m a MAGA cultist? That’s fucking hilarious. Your dumbassery is showing again 😂
@Kingofkings1992 My bad. I shouldn't just assume that everyone who doesn't research a topic or bring receipts is necessarily maga. You could just be plain old misinformed or too lazy to deeper dive into a subject. My bad.
@WhiteSteve fabricating issues over the name of a football team is the WEIRDEST stance to ever have. @loveslongnails no need to apologize. Professionally looking stupid is entirely within my expectations of you.
@Kingofkings1992 so you’re just going to dodge talking about the panel of Natives that appear throughout the video saying that they don’t like it? The ones that said “we’re not mascots” clear as day? Ok….🤦♂️🤷♂️🙄
I’m not saying they speak for all Natives, that’s probably a broader conversation that should be had. I’m just saying non-Native people simply being annoyed by it isn’t a valid reason to dismiss it. It doesn’t matter if the majority of people aren’t offended; it matters if the actual group in question is offended by it. What anyone else thinks of it doesn’t mean dick. It doesn’t need your or my clearance.
It’s not my issue to be passionate about, I’m just passionate about, in this case, the Natives’ wishes being respected, because theirs is the only opinion that matters on the subject. I think that’s what everyone’s resentful of, feeling like they have no say. But this is one of those things where that’s too good goddamn bad.
@WhiteSteve one of the comments on this post said it perfectly. If the name of a football team is something that you deem worthy of crying over, then you really NEED to re-evaluate some things in your life. Leave it to lefties like you to create friction on something where there’s barely any social issue to speak of. So what the majority thinks only matters when it’s working in your interests? Got it 😆
So how many tribes do you speak to before arriving at this conclusion? "Redskins" was a term first coined by colonists and used in a derogatory manner, often interchangeably, to mean "savages" and worse. It's meant in the same way the "N" word was and is used. There's nothing "woke" about it, except that you should be awake to what it means to more than one tribe.
Let's talk a little about the term "woke" since you mentioned it. The right-wing has adopted it as a "dog whistle" without knowing what it meant or where it came from, and designated to mean "anything we don't like", and I DO mean ANYTHING. But if you were to ask a conservative about the origin of the term, they'd look blankly at you or give you a Karoline Leavitt bullshit answer.
I never understood why Cleveland changed their name. There's nothing offensive about the term "Indians", but they did. The "Tomahawk Chop" at a Braves game is pretty nasty in my opinion too, but that's not going away.
If you made it this far, I just want to reiterate that I've YET to talk with a conservative, right-wing or maga-cult individual who even had a clue what or where the term "woke" comes from.
The useless democrats were the only force beating that drum. Even most of the Native American tribes across the US said it didn't bother them. The same with the changing the names of military bases because they had been named after US confederate generals and heroes. One of the few things useless trump is fixing by bringing back the original names.
I don't like the term "woke" but the Democrats didn't stop being bigots in the 1960s. There Bigotry just changed. Now they have the Bigotry of low expectations. Prior to the 60s you were considered better by how "white you are" Now you are considered better by how much white guilt you feel. Same shit different shape.

Thank you, im half Cherokee,, my personal opinion is if the name of a football team is the hill you go to war over , some re-evaluation of life might be in order. I am an engineer, in college I had an instructor was a full Cherokee and we both identified as red skins, I apologise to those who truly take offense over it. Perhaps if I had been to Haskell or grown up in an earlier time it might have a different connotation. But in my opinion, there are far too many real issues for the native American community to face to get excited about this. Thanks for reading
I loved it in the early days of coming, i was watching a group of painters painting BLACK LIFES MATTER ACROSS A STREET IN D. C
In the back ground they had started talking, and at one point one of the people speaking said" what if native Americans demand to be recognized too.
The San Francisco school districts band the word "chief." So if the teacher was relating a story to the students about a crime, the teacher would not be allowed to say chief of police. Because that would be racist. 😂😂
These people are insane.
I would not mourn if San Francisco had another huge earthquake.
Our modern society was always "woke", its just a question if you noticed or not since it was not made out to be such a big deal.
For example, comic book heroes are basically poster children of wokism. Children entertainment such as Sesame street or Mister Rogers is likewise extremely woke. I could go on for days about how widely accepted woke used to be, until the right wing decided to randomly throw a hissyfit about it.
Yeah, I have to disagree somewhat. This is the typical leftist gaslighting whenever this gets brought up. Sure there was political correctness, but you didn't used to get publicly lynched for misgendering someone or whatever.
Wokeism is how rich kids with useless gender studies majors distract us all from the class struggle. They want us to focus as obsessively on ethnicity, sex, and sexual orientation, so that we don't notice they were born with a fucking silver spoon in their mouths, are extremely privileged, and are living the high life in a NYC or London appartment purchased by their rich ass parents while they churn out hateful columns about how white men suck because some douchebag ghosted them on Tinder.
@Zylos The topics might have changed but the attitude of wokism has not. Transgenders were not marginalized or attacked previously, they simply peacefully existed which means that there was no active defense of them either. Black people however WAS oppressed and there very much was an active effort to destroy racists just like we would expect woke people today to destroy people against transgenders.
Same behavior, same tactics, just a different battleground because the target of the bigots has shifted. Wokism has not changed, the opposition HAS.
If you are explicitly attacking white "cis" men over and over, you are in fact a bigot. And the woke movement is undeniably doing this. Add to that its fondness for authoritarianism, its penchant for mob justice, and what you have is basically an as yet slightly more benign form of the Cultural Revolution's Red Guards.
I have known these people IRL, I have debated them online, and they are almost all without honor. Cynical, sadistic, hypocritical fanatics.
@Zylos Yes it is. First of all, flagellation is a religious practice. Secondly, the Guardian is not a woke publication. Thirdly, why on earth do you think people would give two craps about the existence of "training courses"? Normal people do not take random training courses. Even if they existed they would still be a complete waste of time.
@Zylos I dont know what you are talking about since it does not exist. I can't look inside your head, and if you are asking if I believe you are crazy enough to believe that they are actually whipping each other? Yes. Yes, I do believe you would think that.
And no. The Guardian is not woke. Its a private corporation. Whatever you would consider its ideology to be would inevitably start with "corporatism".
Look: I've drawn a white piece-of-shit, I'm a white, straight, male artist and it's been approved by many white men and women, amongst others. Hence, I know it's not offensive:
@Danzigdawson Its not offensive its just unfunny. And you are also the type of person who hates how the woke left mindlessly repeat buzzwords according to your reply to David here. Worth mentioning so people don’t take you as someone who don’t dislike the woke left and their mindless use of buzzwords.
Why does the woke left continue to parrot words until they have no meaning? ↗
@IamRight It's extremely funny bordering on genius: see, for instance, how it highlights the fact that trump —a vain sack of shit— has pathetically been trying to hide his baldness for decades, just by recycling the outline of the original logo's feathers, thus preserving its integrity, as well as subverting, rather efficiently, its meaning.
Parroting (somewhat) "smart-sounding" words like "parroting" (or concepts like "ad hominem" and "strawman") is precisely how MAGA tries to fight the losing battle of trying to appear smart and knowledgeable, depsite the complete lack of intellectual skills required to be one of the fascist cockroaches all desperately waiting in line for their turn to suck trump's tiny penis in an eager and sloppy way.
And since you are asked this question to MAGA people @Danzigdawson
MAGA: are you ready for our first "we told you so"? ↗
You either told us the anti-Trump comments you liked there are the type of people your negativity is directed at when you are negative to MAGA or you enjoy seeing people answering questions directed at others, with negativity on behalf of the people a question is directed at, for example if I were to answer a question directed at Democraps, with negativity about Demonrats.
It's funny AF!!! LMFAO!!! 😂🤣😂
Looks more like Ben Franklin.
It's a sign that the ruling class have power over the narrative of how people are meant to think that it has become this way. They sell a product that men should be stoic and women sexy as being hideous and immoral so they can mind fuck the masses with religious type narratives that change the natural instincts of people to be human.
People get butt hurt over the smallest things. They really need to grow up and not be so entitled
Because feelings get hurt.
I am part native American Induan and I say bring back the Redskins and Indians
Yes, guilty, do gooder whites can be so obnoxious at times. No joy or fun at all.
The leftist crazies scream the loudest, but, as you point out, they are in the minority.
I think you spelled "empathetic, aware & intelligent" wrong.
Why is MAGA in thrall to a crime syndicate led by a pedo?
12 years of public school indoctrination and another 4 years of brainwashing in a liberal college.
It’s so frustrating. I refuse to call them the “commanders.” They will always be the redskins to me. Keep your woke bullshit the fuck out of my sports.
Not NEARLY enough folk are woke, or 45/47 wouldn't befoul the White House.
I think Indigenous peoples would have a different point of view
Think it was white people that wanted to get the name changes.
Because empty vessels make more noise...
