The type of job and how SOCIETY allows that to be compensated is more an indicator of the value placed on a persons income. The work they do often is undervalued. For example, the farmer, power engineer, water source technician, etc. do a far more important and tougher job than the sports personality, the actor, the stock trader, etc. yet gets remunerated much less even though they're far more important to society functioning. They may also have more risk and danger associated with their occupation than the "limelight" starlets.
Teachers are more important than traders, nurses more important than consultants, the list goes on and has a disappointing upside-down notion of who society values most. Just imagine if teachers were paid like singers, actors or performers, nurses like sports athletes then you'd have a different outlook to how young people look up to the adults around them.
I agree. I made $7.25/hour starting out in retail and I did my job well (or... at least what I thought was "well" back then). But what I'd tell someone is that even if you're flipping burgers, sweeping floors, or turning signs, you go in on time and flip burgers, sweep floors, and turn signs better than anyone else there. If nothing else, you develop an appreciation for the grind and the struggle that it took to get to where you want to be.

Albert Einstein was not a wealthy man. Yet his worth exceeded nearly every human who has ever lived. Elon Musk has a lot of wealth. Yet he has very low worth.
Prime example
Broadly income level does correlate with the amount of work they do and their knowledge/worth.
That’s a load of shit. Some of the wealthiest people on the planet are some of the most worthless people too
If we are speaking of what people earn - which is how I took the question and it was implied by work ethic, then it is pretty much the case.
I also consider worth to be what a person knows and their capabilities.
If you are thing of inherited wealth it could quite well be as you say.
Especially the fortunate daughters and sons !!!
