Now, to deconstruct what he just say and maybe nominate this as one of the most humiliating moments in US history, what Witkoff just said is that Trump achieved a diplomatic win by getting Putin to forbid USA and NATO to invite Ukraine into their own organization and putting himself above both as the one who can overrule NATO and USA's own decisions in regards to NATO membership.

Putin literally spat in Trumps face and Trump apparently with genuine gratitude thanked him for it. Like WTF are you even supposed to say at this point? This is honestly pathetic.

Alright, the big update that nobody is surprised about. Putin has come out and denied ever giving anything to Trump in the negotiations and effectively scrapped the whole peace deal that Trump was trying to make.

Just like what happened last time Trump tried and just like what Putin always does to everyone else during negotiations as well. We all knew this was coming, its just sad that it took Trump by surprise.. again..

Trump was perhaps embarrassingly naive in trusting Putin, but that's because he SO strongly wanted to avoid additional, pointless deaths on both sides. Trump is as anti-war as almost anyone, and he did his very best to resolve this without further loss of life.

But Putin is at heart a KGB officer and master liar and manipulator. Nothing he says can be trusted. Trump felt he had to try, even at the risk of being made to be a fool - and he certainly has been made a fool - but that didn't come as the surprise some people like to think. Trump knew the risks, but his morals and values required that he try anyway.

That's now over. Trump now knows that Putin cannot - EVER - be negotiated with. And so now, the gloves come off. The US is going to be supplying Ukraine and Europe with weapons, ammo, and perhaps most importantly, even more and more-detailed intellegence. And they're backing Ukraine going on the offensive, whereas for so long, they forced Ukraine into remaining on defense only.

Trump IS going to make sure the war is ended - the only question is whether there will be anyone left alive in Russia when that's done. Putin obviously doesn't care about the Russian people, but the people ARE going to care when the war comes home to their doorstep. Most Russians have a decent idea of what's going on, though they also know enough not to talk about it or go against the official narrative - but when buildings in Moscow and St. Petersburg start blowing up, there won't be any holding back the truth. Putin's propaganda will be completely exposed to everyone.

Russia is already in HUGE trouble. Russian demographics are horrifically bad - their birthrate is about 1/3 of minimum sustainable rates, and that's mostly first-generation immigrants having those babies, not ethnic Russians. Plus, they've lost a million young men, and they'll lose many more. They're not going to have nearly enough workers to sustain their own economy, much less their pension system.

They've also exhausted nearly all of their stocks of weapons and ammo, and the little they are producing isn't nearly enough. They've been buying back old stocks of weapons and ammo from countries they originally sold them to, but they've nearly exhausted that too.

Putin went all-in with a pair of 3s, and he's going to lose everything. The only question now is how much collateral damage there's going to be.

Also, lets not pretend that Trump is "anti-war". Everything in his life leading up to this tells us that he does not care about the life or suffering of other people even when he is the one who is actively causing it himself. Trump has not suddenly grown a conscience since becoming president for the 2nd time.

What is far more likely is that there is something about this war in particular that Trump sees a benefit in. Most likely a personal benefit as well. And he sees either the end of the war as required or the negotiations as a means to claim it. This also follows how Trump has handled trade negotiations where he has tried to slip in personal deals several times.

It is also quite obvious that Putin used his manipulation training to exploit Trump. The problem however appears to be that Trump can't separate personal and professional connections. He thinks because (in his mind) he is good friends with Putin on a personal level and both of them are the leaders of their respective countries then that also means USA and Russia is now good friends. That is obviously not how the world works and also why it has been so easy for Putin to puppeteer Trump.

As for Russia, yes they are in a horrible situation but countries are very resilient so as long as they keep the war going then they can probably keep their economy together for at least a few more years. The damages are still going to strike but you would be amazed how long you can drag these things out.

A good start would just be to hand over ALL of that since quite frankly the maintenance or cost of disposal is just an additional drain for the tax payer.

Beyond that it would be nice to lift all the restrictions on how that equipment can be used by the Ukrainians.

Want to go a step further? Send more modern stuff or perhaps take in Ukranian recruits and train them using American trainers and resources. Supplying 400,000 new well trained troops for Ukraine without them having to do more than equip them would basically cover the need for an entire offensive by itself.

You could also be a bit cheeky and do what Russia did at the start of the war by invading through Belarus but instead allow Ukraine to launch an offensive from Poland and capture the enclave of Kaliningrad. It would make the Russians REALLY unhappy and its not like they could do anything about it afterwards since they can't naval invade due to their incompetence.

Aside from that you could assist Ukraine in fully destroying Russias energy sector. Oil wells, refineries, storage depots, pipelines and transfer terminals for ships can't move and we know where they are. Give Ukraine some precision strike missiles or enough drones to target them all. It would not be THAT difficult to just erase the entire industry from Russia permanently.

Honestly, I can sit here and brainstorm ideas all day. Russia is a very easy target to bully because they can't really defend themselves and all their important weaknesses are exposed and very public.

The restrictions on how equipment we supply them be used date from the Biden Administration, which didn’t want Russia attacking us in retaliation.

The Ukrainians are already being trained on the equipment we give them, a necessity because they were trained on Soviet-era equipment when the war started.

Assisting Ukraine in damaging (they can’t destroy what’s in Siberia, for example), would be a huge escalation that would invite Russian retaliation and result in a global recession.

Launching any offensive from Poland will invite Russian retaliation on a NATO member, which would cause a larger war and not bring Ukraine closer to victory. I do not want to risk any NATO troops in Ukraine.

Kaliningrad is not strategic to the US, Ukraine, or NATO and is sovereign Russian territory. Think it wouldn’t rally Russians around Putin if it were attacked?

Best thing at this point is to resupply Ukraine and help them strengthen their defenses while engaging in negotiations

But you have to realize just how much shit that the US military has stashed away. While many people are aware of how much equipment and tanks that Russia has stashed away in their stockpiles, they miss the part where USA puts those numbers to absolute shame.

And yes, the restrictions on US military equipment was there during Biden which was a problem. We are here discussing how to end the war though so trying to be diplomatic and limiting Ukraines ability is counter productive. It is also a very simple and FREE change that has a very real material difference in the war.

As for the training that Ukraine provides, its limited in how many they can train at once and the quality is ranging from pretty good to horrible. A problem in getting Ukrainians to volunteer has been that they can't trust they will get real training before being sent off to fight. Promising US quality training would solve this neatly and also allow for extended training in a safe environment where you can train entire armies to be deployed together in for example a potential offensive.

USA has plenty of weapons that puts the entirety of Russia in range and Ukraine has demonstrated ability to both hit deep targets with drones and operate within Russia itself such as when they launched drones from containers.

You also get to choose. End the war or "protect the global economy". Personally I dont even think it would be that bad for USA if there was a global recession from this. The countries hit the hardest would be countries that relied upon Russian imports which is notably NOT USA and furthermore USA is a net exporter which means local demand would be satisfied and there would be a higher demand for US products abroad. There is much to like from this, especially if you are afraid of China.

As for Putin invading Poland or NATO countries.. with what army? Also, he knows that would be suicide. There is literally nothing he can do about it. As for why Kaliningrad? Because Kaliningrad is more important for Russia than Ukraine and Crimea is. Losing Kaliningrad might just be important enough for Putin to have to sue for peace in return for getting it back, and notably it is deceptively easy to conquer in the first place.

As for Russias nuclear threat? First of all, I am not even convinced they still function. Maintaining nukes is expensive and Russia has both been slacking in funding and its widespread corruption might mean that their nukes literally dont work anymore. Beyond that its an irrelevant topic because I dont believe Putin would use them anyways. As for asking Poland about their feelings? If you took your eyes off Poland for a second then they would already be halfway through an invasion of Russia. They would LOVE this idea.

Your comments indicate a desire to totally destroy Russia’s huge energy industry. That isn’t something where you can put the genie back in the bottle once you assume the war will be overt- the economic effects will be felt for years, maybe a decade. Also, if you want to avoid escalation attacks against NATO that might drag USA into a full conflict then you need to end the war quickly. Russia has shown that they are not above doing direct attacks against NATO members such as assassinations and attacks on infrastructure such as when they keep attempting to cut underwater cables "by accident".

These attacks will continue, with or without the Ukraine war, until Russia has lost militarily to such a degree that they no longer has ambitions of expanding their borders and the only way to do this is by pulverizing them in Ukraine and make them sue for peace.

As for Europe being fine with destroying Russias energy sector? Pretty much. The only holdouts would be Russian puppets and the odd dictator wannabe that nobody cares about. Europe has already demonstrated that they can avoid the consequences of the energy shortage by simply coughing up more money and suffering some temporary lost growth. Poland has literally built their army for years now and prepared NATO for a war against Russia. Furthermore they have expressed their desire to acquire nukes and to perform a preemptive strike against Russia. They are about as ready to start the nuclear apocalypse as you can probably get without strictly having the permission to start it themselves. Granted, they are not even alone in this sentiment since the Baltic nations are on the same page.

I also dont see why Ukraine could not retake all of their territory if given proper support. Russia is barely functional as a military at this point and would quickly fold if pressure was applied in the right locations such as against logistics and command. Furthermore, Russia is primed for a government collapse which would again be a possible option to end the war by either trigger a regime change or even Balkanization to shatter the nation into smaller ones. Destroying Russia, either by removing the current government or shattering the nation is definitely in USA's best interest and worth investing about half the current military budget a year at the very least to achieve since that is literally what that budget is meant to achieve.

As for Putins territorial ambitions, he can sure want what he can't have but that does not change the fact that you can force his hands. In fact, I dont think this conflict can be truly solved through cooperative agreement in negotiations. You need to corner one side or the other and make them submit. Personally, I choose Russia to lose at which point fuck Putin and his hopes and dreams.

Again, making Ukraine win the war and even recapture Crimea is not THAT hard if you actually dedicate some serious resources to it instead of tip-toeing around the issue. Russia is fundamentally weak and has countless vulnerabilities you can exploit that is serious enough for them to become unable to operate as a nation or a military.

Another example would be to destroy the Kerch Strait bridge. While Russia has some ships to ferry supplies and goods, they can't supply the entirety of Crimea by sea. That means that they need to use the land bridge along the south coast of occupied Ukraine and they need to use trains for the required quantities of resources. This makes the boats and trains easy targets as well as turn Crimea into a strategic liability to Russia which they can't hold on indefinitely. The longer they try to hold on to Crimea after that, the more they will lose and the easier it would be to invade and reconquer Crimea. Give it a few years of "siege" and you could probably send in the militia by themselves to recapture the entire territory without much assistance.

Trump with his moronic attempts at negotiations just increased the distance between Ukraine and Russia which will mean that you either need to successfully negotiate them back into their original positions or let them extend the war and kill more people to make up the difference.

If those two circles do not overlap at some point where both sides would accept the deal then no amount of negotiations would result in a peace deal and end to the war.

This war started because those two circles did not overlap and nothing has happened in this war that has moved those two circles to make them overlap. You can negotiate until you become blue in the face but if they do not overlap then they do not overlap. Furthermore, Trumps failure in this negotiation was so bad that not only did they not find a point where the circles overlapped but he actively moved Russias circle further away from Ukraines circle which means they are further away from making a deal now than at possibly any time during this war.

Here is a map of Ukraine with a rough line of where Russia is occupying. Granted, this map is incorrect but this is a hypothetical example and the current state of the war is not important for the example.

Imagine you are sitting and negotiating where the line of control should be as part of the peace deal. The "status quo" would be to leave it as it currently is on the map and call it a day. However, neither side is happy where it currently is and Ukraine believes that they can reclaim some of their territory where as Russia believes that they can capture even more territory by continuing this war.

In other words, Russias "circle" of what they would accept starts somewhere far to the left of this line where as Ukraines "circle" of what they would accepts starts somewhere on the right side of the current line.

So how do we move those "circles" closer on the map? By improving or harming their current situation. For example, if you improve Ukraines army so that they stop the Russian advance then that means Russia will no longer believe that they can take more territory. Likewise if Ukraine starts going on the offensive with a stronger military then Russia will be afraid of losing what they have already occupied. This would move Russias "circle" closer towards Ukraines "circle" and bring them close towards a deal and an end to the war.

What Trump did however is to give Putin the belief that he had a stronger position against Ukraine and that he might be able to take more than he previously thought, thus moving his "circle" further away from Ukraines which means that either Ukraine needs to give up more in a peace deal for Putin to accept it or Russia needs to suffer more setbacks than previously to finally move their "circle" over to where Ukraine is currently at.

From what I've seen and heard about this, Trump is a master at making deals, and that would pre-suppose that he is also a good negotiator.

Everything I have seen points to the opposite. The people he has negotiated with and against do not respect his abilities, he lacks good results in negotiations and his negotiation strategy appears childish at best.

There is also the fact that Trump does not appear to know how negotiations actually work in the first place such as when he honestly believed he could strike 90 trade deals in 90 days when actual trade deals takes months if not up to a decade to negotiate.

He clearly pointed out that the only reason that Trump connected with him was BECAUSE he attacked Trump and portrayed him as a villain in a news article (which is public). Furthermore, he clearly outlined his motivations for writing the book which was not because he agreed with Trump but because he was willing to sell out his morals for money during a rough time in his life.

Furthermore, he followed up that book with "soul searching" and trying to make up for having partnered with Trump and written that book.

The reason why he was speaking at that event when Trump first became president is not because he changed his mind. Its because his position on Trump which he has had consistently since before even writing the book suddenly became relevant.
