It was a continuation of a several hundred year trend to decentralize power. Decentralization meant that somebody lost power, which meant there was resistance. When the US was formed, there was no existing entrenched power structure in the new country. They were able to make a leap toward decentralization without much resistance.
The real power division was not the branches of federal government though. It was the states, which all had their own mostly autonomous government.
Seriously? Because the old farts tried a King and didn't like an inbred moron having absolute power based on winning the genetic lottery. So they thought they'd try something different this time.
Because contrary to what Donald Trump wishes, America does NOT want a dictator. If we did, we could have just stayed England all this time.

In an attempt to prevent a future Donald Trump. But the Republican Congress has completely abdicated their role to check the power of the President.
The government has multiple functions that are divided into three major groups. They created the separation of powers so one group does not get too powerful.
I believe the founders were divinely inspired and set it up for checks and balances
They didn't want a monarchy or dictatorship.(Mr. President, are you listening?)
As in our three branches for separation of powers? Yes.
Because they didn't want a king.
To prevent a monarch like leadership
They were brilliant.
