Trump has been clear about taking on the issue of US-China trade, even dating back to his first term in office, something Kissinger was never concerned with. In the days of the USSR, thanks to the genius of Kissinger, the US managed to detach China from Russia by getting closer to China. Of course, Trump is now trying to do the same thing, but with Russia. From a geopolitical point of view, this makes sense, but it's doomed to failure.

What's the solution now? There's no miracle solution, but I think one option would be to accept zero reciprocal customs duties, as proposed by the European Union. Can you imagine the European market united with the American market?
China, Russia, or even India would not be able to withstand such a US–EU combination. Of course, this would pose other very serious difficulties, but on an international level, it would carry considerable weight.

I think President Trump has really shaken up the status quo and it has yet to stabilize to where that US-EU combination will be seriously considered on both sides. One thing I think is clear, is the usual extortion of the US just for favorable diplomacy saw it's final days for a while. Honestly, I am not anti-Trump. For example, Mr. Trump's peace proposal in Ukraine was entirely realistic, but unfortunately Putin is convinced he can win the war completely, and the Ukrainian president (I don't blame him) considers it unacceptable for his territory to be amputated. Yet Trump's proposal was the best, because it allowed Ukraine to save a large part of its territory and Russia to avoid coming out empty-handed and to obtain a lifting of economic sanctions and relations with the US.
However, I'm not a fan of Mr. Trump either. I often find him rude, and he turned the presidential election into a TV show. Furthermore, as mentioned, his results are not bad, but not as extraordinary as his fans claim.

Although I'm highly aware of the Ukrainian president Zelenski's situation, where he is clutching onto power by having the "in war" status... that war ends, the Ukrainian's themselves are clambering to get rid of him. The U. S. pushed Russia to ally with China. And the U. S. has repeatedly proven to Russia that it cannot be trusted. It considers Russia to be its enemy and wants to destroy it.
But allying with China has proven to be very beneficial to both countries economically, technologically, industrially and militarily.
So the U. S. has nothing with which to compel Russia to detach from China.
