I believe the name should remain the Department of Defense for the reason that it's his concern as well as his job to defend America and it's people.
Department of War is like a connotation - as if we are always in a war somewhere in the world and we're ready for it.
I guess you could look at either way.

Prior to World War II, it was the Department of War. The name got changed because of the nuclear age. My honest opinion is that Trump is trolling the left on this change. Let’s look at the left track record lately. Trump asked the Prime Minister of Canada if he wanted to be the 51st, State. The liberal left said Trump was going to invade Canada. Trump talked about Greenland being military strategic. The liberal left said Trump is going to invade Greenland. Trump takes two days off from the cameras and the liberal left says Trump is dead. If I were in Trump shoes, I would do everything I could to troll the left, because they always end up looking stupid.
