Fort Bragg, Fort Hood - gone with the wind. So what's next? Book burnings?

First, I think that the next step is not book burnings. We're not there. Yet. Nor do I think there's a close connection. But I digress.

I'm uncertain/undecided about some of the names. I think we risk scrubbing/erasing history rather than learning from it. One good example that is squarely in that camp is the USS CHANCELLORSVILLE.

Other names make more sense.

All that said, I personally know several of the members who sat on the commission including Admiral Howard (I worked with her and her staff for years) as well as General Neller. They are SMART and GOOD people and I have no doubt they carried out their work well and thoughtfully -- regardless of how folks across the spectrum feel about the results.

So, what do I think? We'll get some of it right and some of it wrong. Some of it will be the right change for the right reasons and others will be changing history for the wrong reasons.

It's a dumb waste of time and resources to virtue signal to a fringe group that doesn't matter. These posts have their own history independent of the people they're named after, and eventually this is going to turn into a regular Rochambeau of renaming every base every few years because whiner babies, until we just start using numbers. In fort Hood's case especially, they have far bigger problems to deal with that have been infamously ignored for years.

The only renaming proposal I've heard that isn't stupid was Benning to Moore, but even that one is hard to stomach since Benning holds such an endearing love-hate status as the post where combat MOS recruits attend OSUT and earn jump wings. It would make more sense to rename Fort Hood to Fort Moore considering the battalion he famously commanded is currently posted there.

Political correctness can go too far but that's not necessarily the case here.

If there was a Fort Greaseball to commemorate the defeat of Mossolini and Italian fascists in WWII, would anyone still think it's appropriate?

What if there was a Fort Cracker that had a history of racism against caucasions?

How about a Fort Kike?

My white brethren would have changed all of these names decades ago. The only difference is that white people aren't the only ones with voices anymore and that gets bigots upset.

I'm indifferent since it's already been decided and is being implemented. I see merits to both sides of the argument, but I'm not going to pick a side since I have no stake in it. Neither side of my family came to the US until the very late 1800s, so I have no interest in fighting the US Civil War all over again, or in the dead people who fought it. My opinion isn't going to matter since the powers that be have already decided.

In my city a very prominent statue of a Confederate general was removed.

Oddly he had publicly stated he would salute Black military officers...

... aaaaand he fought against the city after the war because they wanted to segregate all the city parks, denying entry and access to Blacks...

... and when he died he was widely eulogized by the city’s Black population because he had done so much for them after the war to help integration...

... aaaand a bunch of Woke Leftists who know nothing about history vandalized the statue and threw paint all over it... and the city removed it...

... and now there is just a big empty pile of bricks in the middle of the neighborhood.

It's a bad idea. Those base names had become brand names, not even associated with the Confederate generals they were named after as part of the process of national reconciliation.

But the real point is that the powers-that-be don't care about who the bases were named after, it's about them forcing the identity they want us to have rather than us deciding for ourselves, basically telling us what we have to think and believe.

If the is something that has to be changed it should be the $20 Bill where Andrew Jackson was the founder of the democratic party and was responsible for massacring and seizing the native American land in 1833 causing the (TRAIL OF TEARS) and also owned many plantations and slaves. When Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and made it illegal, the democrats needed to find a new con game which brought in Nathan Bedford Forest who was a confederate general and founder of the KKK. Seems weird we honor them in the first place with statues and naming military bases in their honor.

I am all for it. The United States should name installations after people who supported the US, not people who seceded and went to war with the US. Why should we honor people who supported keeping slaves? And yes, some of the heroes of the North did have slaves at one time, but they supported ridding the US of that.

And it is nothing like book burnings. In fact, even more books should be written telling how evil that system was.
