In a more practical sense- I don't know if you've noticed, but the vast majority of all sports teams are named after warm-blooded animals, even if you discount the ones named after humans. While I have nothing against birds or mammals, there are SO MANY INTERESTING CREATURES just being ignored; it saddens me. Torpedo rays, dragonflies, rattlesnakes... hell, beetles alone would let you name every human sports team, at every level, ever created, and not have to repeat names ONCE.

Let's not kid ourselves, though; there's no room to complain about stereotyping and ethnic slurs when one of the country's most popular teams is named "The Fighting Irish". How long do you think "The Canny Scots" or "The Thrifty Jews" would last?
