The name of the Department of War was changed to the Department of Defense in 1947, in the aftermath of an American victory. the belief than was that America would never fight in another war. Then America fought in what was called a conflict. It was an undeclared war but American soldiers still lost their lives. Twenty years alter America found itself embroiled in another "conflict" after not having a clear victory in Korea. In Vietnam our forces had to fight what was called a limited war. It meant our forces had to fight with one hand tied behind their back. Again, America withdrew with no clear victory.
By changing the name back to Department of War , President Trump is declaring that no longer will America fight half a war. Our military will fight to win and not just to enrich defense contractors. If America has no other option and finds itself in a war they will fight to win.
