Not really. It was your choice to start drinking heavily at first but once youve fallen to alcoholism you can just choose to seek help. You can't just quit like nothing.

Nobody chooses to be an alcoholic. But they DO choose to do what leads to alcoholism.

All addictions are like that. People don't realize they are becoming addicted until it's too late. People think it won't happen to them. They think they have it under control. Even when they no longer control it, it can still take a very long time to admit it. Sometimes they never admit it at all.

That's the trap. People don't realize what is happening to them. The brain does funny things to rationalize what they are doing. Even when people know they should quit, the brain plays all kind of tricks to get them to not quit.

But it's complicated, some people may choose to make themselves alcohol dependent as a cry for help imho, or keep themselves dependent in order to keep claiming disability,,,

I think that there is a genetic disposition to it. However, everyone is born with certain genetic limitations and many overcome them. It is not an excuse to be a drunk.

Alcoholism is a point where the body starts asking for the alcohol and going cold turkey can lead to crazy consequences, which can be fatal.
