I believe the United States of America weren't the United States of America until after the Civil War. Before then, it was the United States ARE instead of the United States IS.

Our country was essentially a loose confederacy of individual states under the umbrella of the Constitution. And none of that was even ratified until 1781 anyway. So July 4 1776 was only a start.

And early on, though the Brits came here in 1619, the Spanish were here a hundred years earlier, along with Dutch and Portuguese settlers. It was not the United States when the British first came. There were simply British colonies such as Virginia and the Carolinas, and others, such as Florida, settled by the Spanish, New York, by the Dutch, until one country or another bought or sold land for more settlers.

And, of course, the English spoke English before this was the United States of America. They'd been speaking English, if only Olde English, 500 years before any colonists of any nation arrived on this shore.

Of course, that's why it's called English. Arguably American's speak an older version from what I've read. If the article I read is to be believed the British accent comes from a finishing school fad a long time ago. American's sound the way we do because our English is what the British spoke when our country was under British control.
