Any public policy that allows people to amass great wealth or retain it has always led to policy that ultimately leads to wealthy people influencing government against the interests of the majority of citizens. It’s not just antithetical to communism and socialism, it’s antithetical to democracy. This is why only idiots still claim that the former two have “never worked”. We’ve never seen large scale government uncorrupted by greed. Greed is simply much more easily detected in them, by design. With the advent of capitalism, the wretches twisted by greed are camouflaged under banners like “ambitious” and “successful”. Until we eventually get “too big to fail”, and the wealthiest people in the world are getting their lousy business models protected by the same governments whose citizens they oppress. It’s fully well documented that democracies don’t last forever either and “capitalism” is provably a part of their downfall every single time. Alexander Tytler has arguably the most recognizable summary of the rise and fall of every democracy in history.
People simply aren’t equipped to live in such large scale societies. The only way to prevent people from growing too influential is to live in a society small enough that every person knows personally every other person. Regardless of the type of government and economy you choose, allowing people you don’t know any amount of say over your rights, responsibilities, privileges and sacrifices is just plain stoopid. En masse, people are nothing if not stoopid.

Yes it's an either / or proposition. Money is power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once a person obtains ridiculous wealth, it changes them.  There is temptation to use that power. They want to keep what they have taken. There is the delusion they "deserve it. With the implication others do not. There is the belief that wealth equates to intelligence and they know best. They don't end up buying votes, they end up buying the political candidates. The risk is too great to allow them to exist. They will always undermine democracy.

I disagree...

I don't think it is one or the other. If someone gains their wealth legitimately I don't think you need to worry about them. They don't damage the country.

It's big oil, pharma and the like who screw each other and the country to profit. I think if you give consequences to how some of these elite gain their money such as schemes and fraud it would balance the entire picture.

These elite do not receive consequences unless its another elite turning them in.

Side example, it is the only reason Epstien was stopped. trump turned him in because of a home he wanted.

No, I believe "We can have democracy in this country, or we can continue to allow national politics to be controlled by an over-represented minority." In other words, the over-representation of the small rural states in the Senate and Electoral College means that we do not have democracy in this country. When 40 million people in California have two senators, while 40 million people in sparsely populated states have 40 senators, it's not democracy.
