First of all, the collusion story wasn't "fake". I'm sure you never read the Mueller Report. What he concluded was that he could not prove collusion based on the information he was given, HOWEVER, he clearly stated that he believed people made false statements to him and omitted information.

Hence, he urged CONGRESS to continue with the investigation and get the information being withheld from him via Congressional Subpoena. Well we all know what happened with that. Many people refused to show up, yet they weren't jailed and should have been. Some people lied under oath, some of them DID get sent to jail, and later they were all pardoned or had their sentences commuted except for Cohen. Why? Because he was telling the truth.

So the upshot of that was not enough evidence that Mueller himself would move forward, but he was thoroughly convinced there was complicit interference from the Russians on Trump's behalf. And he was correct, he just wanted Congress to prove it, but Garland and the Dems dropped that ball.
