Society & Politics In many cases, it’s not all that far for businesses to just cross the state line. This happened with several large companies where I live. Costco, for instance, got tired of being gouged and just crossed the state line and built a new Costco. They didn’t lose many customers. because most all the customers followed them. So the city they fled from is now out of luck. When I hear these socialists talking about their plans, they act like they have all the power. Do they really? The crazy lady from Seattle makes Zoran sounds sane.
What if rich people and corporations decide they don’t wanna pay for free stuff?

Good example. The problem of taxing the rich is the rich can afford to move out and to hire people to reduce their tax
My left wing gov't wants to tax unrealized superannuation profits above a certain threshold. Fund holders response is we're shifting the funds ... so you are not.
Socialists did not figure that one out when they counted the extra $'s they would get. Now they'll get less.

Career politicians stay in office by "doing something" to "fix" a problem. If their fix causes problems, it gives them the opportunity to shine again by "fixing" those problems. Unintended consequences are irrelevant to them.

Quite often I use the phrase the Global Left. Taxing unrealized profits is a Global left desire. Kamal Harris proposed in the US election and a Labor Gov't is trying to implement in Australia in a thin edge of the wedge move.
Is this a coincidence or does the Left globally want to grab "their fair share" of unrealized profits. What works electorally for Australian Labor will be used by US Democrats and vice versa. They swap staff routinely. Of course not just US Aust. This happens across all Western Left wing parties.
Not just unrealized profits. Goes for open borders, 101 genders etc etc. The Global Left has a global play book.
A past Labor gov't tried to windfall tax BHP but the Australian people decided BHP was more trustworthy than the Labor gov't. What the Left doesn't grasp is that sure a big company has a lot of revenue but that goes into paying wages which are taxed. Profits become dividends or investment into future production.
Every government in the world is by virtue of being a goverenment, socialist.
Do you have streets? Lamps for those streets? Any form of public school, firefighters, etc? Welcome to already being a socialist.
Let us be real for a moment here. You either argue that no one should pay any taxes and governments ane democracy should not exist, or you readily agree to socialism in some form.
It all ends up being about how to spend money and how and to what extent to tax it. That is thw whole discussion. Zoran is not introducing something new and scary. He is arguing for a different distribution of an already in place system.
For Zoran Mamdani's public transport a frequent example is comparing it Cuomo. Cuomo gave Elon Musk and Tesla about 940 million to start a new factory. Taxpayer money, given to Tesla, to start a factory. Something they failed to do. Public transport being free in NY is estimated to cost 700 million.
That is the difference. Do you spend this money to sponsor who? Socialism says everyone gets free transport and invests to make it safer. US capitalism says a company gets socialism instead.

Your question fundamentally has nothing to do with your own complaints though.
If the super wealthy left it would actually have little impact as they pay very little tax. Coming from a high tax country with twice the proportion of super wealthy I can assure you that unless a wealth taxnis introduced, they don't care.
If the top 1% left, it would impact it greatly. If the top 0.0001% leaves? They pay negative taxes already.
Mandan has been asked 1000 times how he’s gonna pay for all this stuff, and he says the rich will pay for it. Now you say the rich don’t really pay much so it doesn’t matter. Nice.
@Effably Your comparison is wrong. Tesla was given a 940 million tax break over 10 years. No money ever changed hands when the factory wasn't built, nor would it have even if it was built. For free transport, Mamdani is going to have to spend 700 million to pay people's salaries and buy and maintain equipment.
Asker, he likely means to tax wealth. Which is another thing entirely. Normal taxes do not touch the wealthy a lot. Of course a wealth tax on property or stocks might very well cause some of the ultra wealthy to leave. But even just ensuring companies pay their taxes as intended will more than fund his so far announced plans. As for collective traffic it is already within the budget.
As for AviatorTom, you are partially correct and partially not, but I thank you for checking me on it. It has indeed been a 10 year build. However NY built it and spent near 1 billion USD for it. Followed by a 1$, yes, one dollar, rental fee to Tesla for using it. The question is when will the residents of those states wake up. Their economies are currently being decimated while other states are being enriched at their expense. Eventually their Islamic Socialist leaders will call for them to carry out Jihad against the other American states which will lead to their total annihilation by overwhelming military force.

Well, now they are in control of the government of NYC and they aren't going to get their way. Their federal funding will get cut and their communist programs will not work... So what will happen? They will start riots, they will attack, rape, murder, and kidnap civilians just the same... It's what they do... When the riots happen, the grocery stores will close and people will go hungry just like Gaza, which will provoke National Guard to enter NYC and possibly trigger the Insurrection Act. All you have to do is look to Israel and you will see how the Muslim Brotherhood treats civilians... Wake up... It's time to go to school...

It's common to play the cross-the-birder game. I used to live in the Northeast where each county had a different sales tax rate. A local developer built a huge mall just a few feet into an adjacent county, where sales tax was 0.5% less, knowing it would attract shoppers from the other county. It did, a huge success.
Even on small items when they add up. It wasn't uncommon for people to spend hundreds of dollars in total at the many stores in the mall during one day of shopping.
Margaret Thatchers was spot on in her assessment. Socialism doesn’t work in the long run. Even in well funding oil economies like Venezuela. NYC will shed their wealthy class and Financial Companies its will move as it isn’t that hard.
They aren't bright. It's a childish world view to take from people because you happen to be jealous of their success. They got mad as a toddler when their brother got a slightly bigger piece of cake and carry that into adulthood.

It just described the Seattle lady. Her parents paid for her college and they are now paying for her daycare. She should just realize she was in a position where she was lucky, and not everyone is lucky. She never really ran anything and now she’s going to be running a very large city with multi billion dollar budget. Good luck.
They can keep moving, but there's a cost. It's no big deal to close one location to open a nearby location across a state border. Moving headquarters is a much bigger deal. Some of the most valued employees won't move, and it can take years to recover from a loss of experienced employees.
You're right it's better to give the companies all the power and be a debt slave your entire life.

You’re part of the problem. You somehow think you have power over these companies when you don’t. What are you gonna do if they move? You gonna forceforce them to come back? The idiot mayor of San Francisco thought she had the power over the companies and she would force them to stay.🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sticking your head in the sound like an ostrich doesn’t actually mean you’re safe.
Your country is getting destroyed by debt and corruption and you're cheering for it like it's a good thing. Who do you think gets screwed when companies don't pay taxes? It's you. The government is trying to lower the burden on you by making companies pay what they're supposed to pay, and you're like "look at these idiots".
They give you loans because a lot of people can't afford to live in your country. Then they try and get it to the point where every dollar you earn has to go to interest payments, that's their dream. And when people can't pay back their loans the banks know they're gonna get bailed out with your tax payer money, because they're too big to fail. So all the risk they took on by giving out too many loans, they never have to pay the price for it.
And you're standing there cheering for the people who are robbing you. You're just a money sponge to them and they can squeeze you whenever they feel like it. Idc if you keep living in delusion but don't tell me that I should be cheering for these companies too you can do that by yourself.
Depends who's in political power. Microsoft at one time thought it ran the show. Then the gov't declared it a monopoly and broke it up. Economic power, is power. But who owns the tomahawk cruise misses in the end decides policy.🤣
