Love that band and the song. What do you mean with understand? You even gave the lyrics.

I mean it is it bad or good what the man in the song did- first part.

What about the woman he shot with "the white flag" ...

The song is about soldiers committing warcrimes and even soldiers being peer pressured into them, while still being worshipped as great heros of war when they get home. The problem with soldiers being seen as good and heros, while they often do horrible things while deployed and the hipocrisy that this creates.
