Regarding his objectives. He probably covets it's natural resources. But, more than that, I read that Greenland lies between Russia and the U. S. and is an optimal spot to place defensive missiles that could intercept Russian missiles at their apogee, which is the optimum place to intercept them.
Naturally, that strategy would not be Trump's. It would come from the psychopaths running the national defense agencies who imagine winning WWIII.
But that, plus the idea of taking credit for expanding U. S. territory, would appeal to Trump.

Trumps stance is that just because you had a boat land there forever ago doesn't mean you get to effectively decide worldwide trade security. With the ice melting in the article region there's going to be opportunities for untapped oil/gas minerals, rare earth minerals, lucrative new trade routes, settling lands and islands etc. Denmark and Canada have disputs over territory. Russia is building new artic military bases.
