Is it ignorant to claim that all homeless people are homeless because they choose to be?

I live in a small town when the homeless problem has gotten really bad starting about 10 years ago. Whenever my mom drives by a homeless person, she's like "fucking bums, get a job. I don't feel sorry for all of them" when I say that not all of them choose homelessness, she's like "yes they do. There are places they can go to get help".

In the UK if you find yourself homeless, say for example after a break up, the local authorities have a legal duty to find you a home.

It sounds good right? The problem is that home could be mean sharing a house with numerous other guys who could be alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals just out of jail, and a considerable distance from your job. There's been cases of people offered homes hundreds of miles away

If you refuse this place then the authorities won't help anymore, they've ticked their little box and they say you deliberately made yourself homeless.

Of course, lucky for her she's never been so if she thinks that they don't help or their help is so insufficient it makes you homeless. Some get lucky like my friends who managed to get a council flat within a few years but not for me.
And I would say a major factor cause one had a kid. Without that you are more screwed.
Reality is you get bad options and no matter what it is bad. Lucky my dad isn't like my mother kicking me to the street and I have my friend who'd let me stay really if I needed but it's not ideal when ya know they have a child in a small flat.
And theoretically I could afford rent somewhere but guess what? I'd have no money for food or drink and just have no money? What good is that?

There isn't some magical way to choose not to be homeless.

Pretty much. There are plenty of resources for women and children. There are almost none for men. That’s why more than two thirds of homeless are men and adolescent boys. In this day and age, many people do choose homelessness; especially in blue zones that pour tax dollars into the problem like water down the drain. I’ve talked to some of them. They get food, clean clothes, places to shower, a cell phone, and even cash for drugs if they can’t get the drugs for free from the government. No joke. There are videos on youtube of people explaining why they choose homelessness.

Convenience more than ignorance, in my opinion, because it seems convenient to think of the world and the people around us as a bunch of yes/no switches. This level of detachment makes the world a much easier thing to cope with?

of course, it's rough in my area, not enough affordable housing. one little problemo with income and out in the street.

It is true not all of them are homeless by choice but the majority are\. The shelters do not allow drugs or alcohol so they would rather sleep on the streets.
