How is it possible for someone who doesn't speak a word of English to hold American passports?

I saw someone like this coming back from one of my recent trips. And they weren't born in the US. From what I gathered, they were born in Soviet Union (present day Moldova). Their daughter had to translate them, because they didn't speak English, yet I saw that they were carrying American passports.

I thought you had to know English to get US citizenship.

Usa has made it a point to put there finger in the plate of every nation across the globe. Solder boy to the top line diplomat has a kid with the locals and boom you got a American citizen never setting foot in America.

You need to know some English to become a naturalized citizen. But I don't know how much. It's possible that someone knew just enough English to become a citizen. A foreign language is something that you need to use it or lose it. Maybe they knew enough to become a citizen, then promptly forgot it.

Just a guess but perhaps they did speak English but struggle with accents. Also if it's there second language there will still be a lot of words they don't know.

No the US has no official language. You can be born in the US spend your entire childhood in let's say... Japan where your father was stationed and never really learn English because your mother is Japanese. Or you out father is a diplomat and you are born overseas but both your parents are American. Then you still get a US passport even if you don't read or write English.

Whether it's an "official" language or not, you must know English to become a naturalized citizen. The government makes that very clear. That's not anything new. You must be able to read, write and speak English.

@WindAtMyBack my example was a natural born US citizen who may not read or speak English. It's just one example there are others. Assuming that someone isn't a natural born citizen just because they don't speak English and therefore most be naturalized is the thought process distinction.
