How can you live in America and be illiterate?

Everyone gets a free education growing up. So how is it that 20% of the population is illiterate?

Everyone certainly does not get a free education. Or at least not the same one. Republican ran states have converted public schools almost entirely into daycare so that the only way to get a real education is by going to a private school, which the state is happy to pay for if you are already rich.

Because the education system pushes through people who have like a 6th grade reading level. The move to standardized testing, and I think smartphones also have contributed

Sort of true. I had friends dumb as bricks growing up and they passed anyways. It might be due to the no child left behind act bush signed.
