What do you think it takes to be a great military soldier?

Stupidity helps a lot. Slow learners like me tend stick around longer.

• Not loving money helps.
• Must enjoy sleeping in swamps filled with mosquitoes, snow, on solid rock on the side of a mountain, in a damp forest, in rain, on sand, etc.
• Must learn to sleep in random 15 minute, 1 hour, and 3 hour increments.
• Must not be overly attached to really good foods and willing to heat your meal using exothermic chemical reaction pouches and eat out of plastic bags while sitting on the ground.
• Must see 24 inoculations at a time as a fun thing.
• Must view showers as optional.
• Must like constant changes of scenery.
• Must not get attached to coworkers and welcome a constant stream of replacements.
• Must like long periods of infinite boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror.
• Must not be a slave to fashion. Best if you don't know what fashion is.
• Must enjoy equipment maintenance.
• Must be able to tolerate living apart from the rest of society.
• Must be at least a little paranoid.

It is funny when you stand back and look at it from a distance in time. But when you're in the middle of it, it seems totally normal. It's just what you do every day. Everyone around you is doing the same thing.

ROFL, yank someone living a suburban existence off the street and just drop them into that environment and they would probably sit and cry or lose their minds. Even everyday things would be totally alien to someone who doesn't know where you get clothes or food. The social order in a completely different societal structure. Where your possessions amount to whatever you carry on your back and in your pockets.

One thing is for sure: the military life isn't for everyone just like it isn't for everyone to understand necessarily. There are simply different ways to live in this world.

Courage and physical strength go without saying but it seems like thinking on your feet is a lot of it creativity would definitely help too. . That and just being stubborn, never giving in.

They are often the oldest son in their family and often had more adult expectations on them than normal so the became more protective
