selfishness, complacency... and apathy

those three could, generally, define the political situation of the USA as of now...

the selfishness of the party in power, the complacency of the party not in power but awaiting their turn to get power back, and of course... the apathy of everyone else who doesn't give a fuck enough to vote or get involved in politics that much

however, I've always thought that the next step is one that the government does not want to happen... absolute and complete control is the most difficult to maintain and also the less likely to last for longer

as of now, they have the Status Quo that would guarantee them their positions which they both can really share... there has never been a third party in the USA (let's pretend 1860 didn't exist for us) and there has never been a time in which the politicians had more power under the illusion of people having a word of a choice

Tytler could not reasonably comment on democracy in 1770 because it universally did not exist. Universal suffrage mostly occurred early 1900's.

His supposition that people will vote for the biggest benefits has a natural opposition in that people will also vote for the benefit of lower taxes. There will be a natural balance formed between benefits and willingness to be taxed.

I do think families are the natural unit of society and to the degree families become unstable and non functional leads to greater decay of the country. It takes affluence to be selfishly hedonistic.

So I agree with the selfishness/complacency/apathy part of his cycle. If every one is happy with where they are, advancement is not possible.

We are halfway between apathy and dependence now. The cycle can be broken, but it will require an uprising of enough citizens that change the character of the culture. I think the United States as we have known it for one hundred and fifty years, is coming to an end. If you want a preview, take a look at Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia.

Abundance can unfortunately leads to entitlement (and laziness) for people who never experienced real struggle and sacrifice.

And we got people literally creating and imagining things to complain, protest and riot about now. Just to give them a delusional feeling of “standing for something” even if it leads to their own self destruction. Woke white women are by far the worst when it comes to all of this

Yes, America appears to be somewhere between Apathy and Dependence. I don't think it's necessarily a 200-year timescale though, and America seems to be way ahead of schedule.
