Has an independent been governor ever?

In my state, an independent is running and I think he has a great chance to win. Has it ever happened in any state that an independent? This could be historic.

Yes there have, even in recent years. There have also been independents in the US Congress. We've also had some independents make a pretty good presidential run. I think Ross Perot even won a state in his bid for president.

In this case, I'm calling anyone not a Republican or Democrat an independent. That would include people like Bernie Sanders, George Wallace, etc.

I also think of Trump as an independent. But the way the system works, he was forced to choose a mainstream party if he stood much chance at winning.

Yes, there have been several Independent governors. The most recent is Bill Walker of Alaska (2014-2018).
