Why do people look down on a receptionist in a hotel?

Some people treat us very poorly in the society just because we work in the reception business in the hotels. And I still don't know why.

I know 3 languages, I have 2 college degrees, I also got computer and coding skills. But I work in this field because I live in a terrible city with poor opportunities, and economically my country is so weak.

speaks to the personality fo the person. while you work in a service industry it's like you are a servant but i think too many people see it this way. they see receptionists as people who are effectively there to serve and cater to their needs.

it is messed up that you'd be treated with disrespect.

People are just jealous you have an easy job so they feel like it gives them a right to make it hard.

I don't look down on receptionists in hotels. It takes a lot to do a job like that. You have to be very hospitable and friendly at all times even when you're down and don't feel like conversing with others.

My interaction with front desk staff is more observation than interaction. Usually on a family vacation where my parents are checking in. I just notice how they are always very friendly and polite. Perhaps it is the places we stay, but that is my general view.

People often look down on a hotel receptionist because of societal bias toward service jobs, assuming they’re “less important” or “low skill.”

In reality, receptionists are the face of the business, managing complex tasks, solving problems, and creating first impressions.

Respect should come from recognizing responsibility and skill, not the title.

I don't think they do. A couple of the guys working at the hotel I stayed at in Turkey had technical degrees but there was a paucity of openings in their field in the country.

They had degrees in Computer Science or some such, but there was a big waiting list for jobs - apparently things are done differently there.
