The evidence is life is easy... to start. The earth formed 4.5 billion years ago. There was certainly cyano bacteria at 3.5 billion years and these fellas are still making mud balls in Shark Bay Western Australia.

There is some evidence but not hard proof that life was present at 4.1 billion years. (reminants of the first continent VaalBara is in Western Australia so the oldest stuff is there).

So life happened relatively soon after the earth cooled.

However evolution of more complex multicellular animals took a long time. It has taken 4 billion years for us smart apes to develop firearms and nuclear bombs, iphones etc.

But we might not have made it. During the last Ice Age, CO2 got down to 180 ppm and that was barely enough to support plant life. At best we only have 1 billion years left but potentially we don't make it through the next Ice Age.

So plentiful Alien life forms will be present as unicellular bacteria. But more intelligent aliens will only exist for a brief period on suitable planets - say for 1/6 of the life of the planet.

After single cell life forms you have to wait for random mutations to advance up the chain. You don't even have sexual selection in the early days.

It's hard to think that we are the only living things in the gigantic universe, with billions of stars and millions of planets similar to Earth. The distances are so great though, that we may never meet any other living things in the universe.

Yes. 14,7 billions light years in every direction and would be a gigantic waste of space just for one civilization.
I think primitive life like bacteria or archaea are very common on other planets, probably even in our solar system but more developed life is more rare. Intelligent life wouldn't be very common statistically but if w take under account size of universe, amount of stars alone in our galaxy that is higher than all sand cores on all beaches on earth, amount of systems with planets we found until today, amount of planets in habitable zone,... etc. It likely our galaxy contains several millions of intelligent civilizaitons.

It would be typical of human arrogance and stupidity to believe they are the only conscious beings in the entire Cosmos. LOL I look at it this way - presuming there IS intelligent life in the Universe, they would know better than to contact Earthlings.

I believe, simply based on probability, that they probably do exist on other planets. If they're smart, they will still stay well away from us.
